Looking at buying a MSP and want advice? Post here!

Hey guys, sorry for the delay.. Carfax was clean, but i found one with 37k miles for not a ton more and feel pretty good about it.. I know there are probably more reliable cars, but not for the fun and I do 70miles a day.. I like to enjoy it.. Anyway. the new one i am hopefully buying this weekend has some differences on the engine. Looks to me like the intake is different. And the sway bar looked aftermarket, but i don't know why b/c stock the thing was a riot to drive. Have another look if you dont mind. Just dont want anything heavily modded b/c my goal is fun reliable.

The intake is a cold air intake, you should be fine. The strut bar is also stock as well. I dont recall if its suppose to be red or not. Mine was silver an the previous owner painted it blue! They look good.

it obviously has a cold air intake but it's the wiseco sticker on the front edge of the engine bay that would concern me. they make forged pistons and other internals. unless the previous owner just likes the stick there may have been some more serious work done on the engine!

edit: ninjas everywhere....

Its not bad news, its kind of the reply i expected.. I am more interested in stock and i def. don't want something that was built up, beat on, then parted out the mods for trade in. Specifically for the price. Guess ill keep looking. the 99k one is still available.

honestly, at this point it's gonna be tough to find an MSP that hasn't been modded and/or had at least a few different owners.

yeah just when you ever get a MSP just check EVERYTHING. If a memeber that knows his stuff lives around you get him to see if he can find any thing that is missing or what could of been there. Like my car I found out that the old owner had a upgraded SMIC at one time. and he welded a fartcan onto it.. (first thing to remove) haha. But just make sure everything is in proper working condition and not to worn out. Some things like the LSD you cant really check. But rear clunk, wastegate. holes for pipe routing of a FMIC maybe, can be easily found.

Here are the craigslist links if anyone wants to take a look.. Hope its not against forum rules, but probably what i should have done in the first place.
Not against the rules so long as they're not yours for sale :)

Obviously the lower mileage one is more appealing. No underhood shots though. Would be worth looking at and making an offer (price seems a bit high even with the low mileage) if everything checks out.

The paint on the black mica looks a bit dull. It's a tough color to keep looking new, but I get the sense parts of it may have had body work. The RR quarter panel almost looks like it's got some body filler on it. Plus they put a crappy stock HU from a base protege. Not that that is hard to fix.

That's what i thought,, i was thinking closer to 8500, but still don't have enough exposure to the cars to know whats a good price to look for. even 8500 seems at the top of the reasonable range. Whats a good range to look for for a low miles msp... 7000-8500. I know its subjective and to each his own, just wondering you thoughts.

Yea... the $9900 has a fair amount of dealer profit factored into it. I'm guessing they paid no more than $6-6.5k for that car. I'd offer $8k and see what happens.

Thinking about buying a MSP.

Well, as it stands I was in a car accident last month and my car was totalled out. I have been out of the mazda comunity for quite some time (have had 2 FC3S' in the past) and a friend of mine brought up the MSP and I was surprised to see how little they are going for now.

I am seriously thinking about replacing my wrecked car with something more fun than what I had and the MSP appears to be it, but I was wondering if all of you almighty MSP owners could give me your pro's and con's to owning this fine automobile.

Keep in mind, I am looking for it to be a DD with only minor mods to make the car a little more peppy than stock. thinking a upgraded SMIC with Hardpipes, intake and exhaust.

I would appreciate your thoughts / tips / suggestions on what to look for and what to stay away from when looking at this particular car.

Thanks in advance.

if you do get a MSP make sure you have it looked over again and look it over one more time by another person.... They are great cars when everything is up and running right but they are touchy little bitches....Almost like my gf when its that time. lmfao

please post up the VIN# of the car your looking at and we(the forum members) might be able to help you see if that car used to belong to a member here on the forums.

look for signs of mods on the car even if its 100% stock. Also if you have a boost/vac gauge bring it with you to check the status of the car with it and check the WGA.

If you think about getting a 3rd party warranty... lets just say you better damn well have all the stock parts for the car and EVERY oil change receipt. Also if you get a 3rd party warranty on it you BETTER get ALL of the fluids changed ASAP by a shop .Your autozone receipts only prove that you purchased the fluid and not actually did the change nor that you even did it right.

Edit: If your picking it up from someone and not a dealer. You might want to inquire about the LSD and if it has broke or not. Many will say they all will break but when no one knows, its like a time bomb. Also if it has been replaced see if it was replaced with a "upgraded/welded" stocker or aftermarket.

Hi this is my first post. I joined because i put a down payment on a black msp with just under 80 k on it, 1 owner and seems totally bone stock. I really liked the way it drove and looked but looking through these forums i saw all the trouble people have with them. Though the only problem i noticed was the head unit not working and the clunk from the sway bar bushings. I'm just looking for some opinions on how much trouble it might give if i go through with the purchase.

people mod their cars and beat the crap out of them. and then they seem shocked that s*** breaks down. treat it right and you'll be fine. welcome to the forums

Yeah that's what i was wondering, and since this one is stock and as clean as it is i was thinking it might be okay as long i take care of it. I just don't want to end up unhappy with it like i am with my current car (02 acr neon)

I really appreciate the pointers on looking for an MSP. unfortunately I do have to wait to buy one till I settle my accident claim, and actually have the money for the car. I've decided after losing my last car in this accident I deffinately do not want to get into any more car payments.... if I can't pay cash I ain't getting it.

As far as the mention of a 3rd party warranty. I am deffinately not too worried about that I can and will do all the work myself. and I am used to a finicky car, as I said in my earlier post, I have owned 2 RX-7s previously. I would have loved to get another, but realistically speaking I need a 4 door car as I have a family now, which I didn't when I had the FC's.

03 mazdaspeed protege

Hi guys im just looking to buy a new car. So I went to go look at a metallic black 2003 mazdaspeed protege with under 43,000 miles. The car had a bigger turbo bosting 10 psi, exhaust, intake, gauges inside (some weren't connected) and a ecu. I test drove the car it was nice and smooth. The car was pretty clean inside and out. There was only one problem I notcied when you started the car it would make a weird noise, but would go away once it reved up. The guy I was going to buy it from only took it into the shop and his mechanic said there was a exhaust leak? If I could remember right. Would this car even pass the California Emission Test? The guy purchased the car from a dealer according to him and only had it for 4 months because he is "going away to college" he was a young fellow so it was kinda sketchy buying it from him. So I told him to smog it and to give me a call if it passed. The guy was asking $7,500 for the car is this a reasonable price? Like I said im just getting my first mazda and ive owned trucks all my life. So maybe you guys can help me decide if its a good car or not.
Thanks for the help :).
P.S sorry if this is the wrong place to post this.(scratch)

throught you said you looked at a metallic black..? the picture you attached shows a spicy orange..
that sounds like a good price, but check to see if its stock exhaust if it is the boosting to 10 psi isnt too great on the engine without supported mods, and exhaust is one of them. cant say anything about cali smog though, im a new yorker, we only have CEL checks by me in terms of emissions for anything newer then 1997
