Locked out....

Two days ago I used my remote start then opened the doors with it and threw my purse in the car on the passenger side...decided to reach over and put my key in the ignition. Shut the passenger door went back after shoveling a little snow and low and behold all the doors were locked. Now why did this happen? Even if I had gotten in and put the key in the ignition the doors do not lock after I get in. Called dealer....he could not shed any light on why and gave me the Roadside assistance #....they first told me 46 hours....Yikes..I think she meant 4-6 hours cuz then she came back on the phone and said 4 hours to wait for help. Hubby was in a seminar far away. Police don't help unless a kid is inside and then called a locksmith. Car ran for an hour until locksmith came and took 3 minutes and $75 to open it. Argh! Anyone have this happen? Any thoughts on this? Is there a feature I can get shut off so it does not lock. I think one time before I almost had it lock on me too. Makes me nervous! Thanks and I hope this is not a repeat issue mentioned here on the forum.

the alarm will rearm itself after 30 seconds unless the drivers side door is the door that is opened...

its a semi safety feature incase you accidentally unlock the car...

Out of curiosity, do you have the advance keyless entry? If you do, I would think that some thing with the remote start is messed up. I have the advance keyless entry but I don't have the remote start and my wife and I have tried everything we can think of to try and lock a key in the car.

Reason asking is that scenario is one that we have not tried yet.

I believe auto-lock is only available with the tech package (advanced key sysxtem), in which case locking yourself out would be impossible - if you leave the keycard inside, you can open the car using the "request button" on the outside. Or am I wrong?

Actually, if you did have auto lock enabled, this couldn't happen in this situation. Since the key never left the range of the locks, the doors would not lock and even if they did, pressing the request button on the door handle would recognize a key in the area and open the door.

Try this... but only with an extra key handy!

Remote-Start your car... go and unlock it, put the key inside and close the door. Wait a while (time it if you like) and see if it relocks your car.

If it does, it's probably the remote-start. You HAVE TO disengage the remote start by putting the key in the ignition, turning it to "on" and tapping the brake. You should then be able to close the door with key still in the ignition and it will not relock.

That's the only thing I can think of... though I am confused because you said the car kept right on running (for an hour). With the remote-start it should go off automatically after about 10-15 minutes if it hasn't been disengaged.

Could be they did something wrong when they installed it... Did you get the Mazda Remote-Start or an Aftermarket one?

With Advanced Key it's IMPOSSIBLE to lock your key-fob in the car... the car just won't lock if the key is detected inside the cabin.

I don't have tech pkg or that special key. So....Thanks for your input gang. Hmmmm...

Hey Wendy. I just had an OEM/Mazda factory remote starter installed over the weekend and have been playing with it. I have the Tech package so I would have the advanced start key. I also have the autolock enabled.

Anyways, this is what I noticed. After remote starting your car and getting in and turning the ignition switch to the ON position, the doors automatically locked. I didn't time it since I was on my cellphone checking voicemail at that time but I would assume it is between 20-30 secs. If it so happen that I stepped out before that 20-30 secs timeframe, I can easily unlock the doors either using the request button or my smart key (credit card type).

She already put the keys in the ignition CXRabbit that's why the engine continously ran for an hour. You get this habit of speed reading and that's why you get confused. You did this with my iPod post, remember

(dunno) (smash) (braindead

Yes, but you should have to tap the brake to disengage the remote-start... it shouldn't be just a matter of putting the key in the ignition.

This is interesting.....I used the remote start, opened the passenger door like before and got in and sat down, put the key in the ignition and sat there to see if it would lock because to me it was like doing what I did the other day except that I sat in the seat! The car doors never locked.....go figure!!??? Again I have the Mazda installed remote start, no credit card key, no tech pkg. Hubby has extra key but he was no where nearby that day. Probaly $100 to get another one I suppose but what if I am not at home and it happens. Oh well.....again thanks for your input everyone. I will let you know if I figure it out!

If your keys get locked in, try this

Try this one for yourself and make sure it works. If you have a car (like the CX-7) that has a remote unlock button, if you ever lock your keys in your car again, and can reach the person who has the OTHER key by cell phone, try this:

Call the person, and have them hold the other key next to the microphone on their cell phone. Hold YOUR cell phone near the driver's side door handle. Have the other person press the unlock button one time. Your car will unlock.

Sounds strange, but try it yourself and see. It actually works, saving a AAA bill or waiting for Mazda roadside assistance. Of course, if you cannot get hold of the person with the other key, you are stuck.
