Welcome back, Linux. We're glad you're ok. Interesting that "she" came to the hospital....wow.
And the appendix is beleived (based upon the purpose homologous organs serve in other creatures) to digest hard-to-digest things, but specifically seeds and nuts.
It not only is more effective at breaking down hard-to-digest foods (think of all the corn we "expel"!) but can make toxic foods non-toxic. Kind of a AEM bypass valve for our intestines (hey, a car analogy!). Toxic seeds and such go into the (once much larger) appendix and are broken down by a combo of our bodily fluids and microorganisms that change the chemical composition of the food to either eliminate the toxin, or release it into the body in such small amounts that it is non-toxic.
Also, by keeping foods in there for a long time with microorganisms, it serves a similar purpose to the multiple stomachs of ruminants (animals that chew cud) by allowing digestion of celluloids and other s*** (grasses and seeds).
B.A. in anthropology, I know all sorts of interesting evolutionary sh*t. What a dork!
