02 P5 Silver
Hi,
long time listener, first time caller. Just got a set of aftermarket headlamps for my P5. They have NO instructions. Anybody changed out the headlamps on a USA spec '02 P5? The new ones have a single bulb [H4], while the OEM lamps have a duo [H7 for lows and I forget the hi-beam designation.] ANY help is greatly appreciated!!! (confused) (huh) (help)

Lost in th SFV....

sounds like you got the regular protege headlamps - they have the dual high/low, whereas it's separate in the P5. I think you may have to return them...

To my knowledge, there are no aftermarket headlamps for the P5, only the ones from the factory, but I could be wrong

The place I got them from says they fit. No returns yet.... If you type "Mazda P5" into a search at eBay, they come up. Look pretty cool too and were 200$ less then the dealer wants for ONE

They are for the protege. Somewhere on here, and someone may chime in with the details, are instructions of how to run the wiring for them.

I am in a similar boat. I need new ones.

Welcome, and I hope the search nazis don't get you.

Wise, can you post a pic of them? From what you're describing, they sound like the regular Pro ones, but a pic will tell for sure. Technically, they probably do fit (the shape of the hood and bumper), but you'd need a new wiring harness and possibly a few other odds and ends.

If anyone is looking for new P5 headlight assemblies, and want the black housing, I can get a set for you at a decent price. They're still not cheap, but are def. less expensive than from the dealer.

Sounds like you got the sedan lights. They'll fit no problem, and the wiring is easy. I'm not sure of the link, but look at the online shop manual and compare the two wiring diagrams. You pretty much take the power wire out of the high beam plug, and stick it into the open slot of the stock white plug that comes with your P5. Tape of the extra wire (it's jsut a ground anyway) and then you're in business. Hope that makes sense.

Sorry, it's not a link, but if you look on ebay search for mazda protege 5. 4 diffrent sellers have these lights. Thanx for all the support and I will search for a wiring diagram. Any luck on the physical removal? :)

ok i will state the obvious.....they dont make aftermarket P5 headlights....you my friend just purchased a regular sedan headlight. But dont worry it fits the p5. all you have to do is go to the store and purchase an H4 headlamp wiring. it should cost you 7 dollars depending on where you live maybe less. and all it takes is a cut and conect and making sure you have it wired to the right lamp (high beam and low beam) and your all done....any questions let me know.....Did the conversion before....also you can convert a regular sedan headlight to a p5 headlight same way.....Hope that helps.

Yeah, that's all those are...Why change them tho? The P5 headlights are pretty damn bright. I get flashed all the time w/ my low beams on. (haha, wow, did THAT come out wrong lmao. Take it how u want lol)

To get to the lights look at the headlight blackout how-to in the how-to section. Btw, it's not as easy as maxx says, doing it that way could blow up the bulb because both filaments will be lit with the highbeams on.

Thanks for the correction! Although, would it not be the same as just holding the "flash to pass" feature down? It would definitly shorten bulb life, but wouldnt it be worht it to have THAT much illumination?
