I am curious as to what everyone thinks of them, what have they seen that they liked and what have they seen go wrong. No BS "I Heard" stories please.

As part of my new role at my company, I am picking out all of the equiptment we are using. Plasma monitors are a major area that my companyhas just been getting "whatever" I'd like to change this.

After about 4 hours yeastureday comparing screens, I have to say that the Panasonics EDTV models where the best I found for there segment. For a job coming up I am debating between some Pioneers, Hitachi, NEC and Panasonics. For this job EDTV will do although on some other I will ned up to a 1280x1024 native resolution for computer graphics and being HDTV goes hand in hand with that.

Discuss.

I've never been a fan of plasmas. We had an pioneer elite for a while and only after 1.5 years the color seperation was tremendous. It was rather expensive to have tuned as well. Nice in theory however it still needs some time. I purchased a runco DLP projector about a year ago and wouldn't do it any different. However, I'm considering purchasing this http://www.circuitcity.com/ssm/Samsung-50-DLP-HDTV-Monitor-HL-P5085W-/sem/rpsm/oid/97046/rpem/ccd/productDetail.do

Awesome reviews and amazing quality. That's me though.

DLP.

Plasmas burn, LCDs suck ass big time. We have a bunch of panasonic plasmas here. They work for a little while.

for home use, I wouldn't waste my money on a plasma yet, or LCD.

Hence why I bought a front projector, but that's not going to work for your situation.

For business, things are a little different.

Plasmas suck, too expensive, they burn out, and cost more money to repair than you can believe, don't risk it...Bigger is better anyways, my parents have a 61in HDTV Sony (Projection), friggin awesome, but 2 weeks outta warranty and cost $500 to get up and running again, oh well, I am just saying I have heard worst stories about Plasma. Also, we have a friend who owns a plasma, and is jealous of our projection, (picture quality).

plasmas don't really burn out. you have to get them recharged after a while. and from what i understand it is really expensive. give it 2 or 3 more years and all will be fine with them.

the idiots at the bar i bounce at part time just bought 3 plasmas

after a year of being on 14 hours a day and endless amounts of cigarette smoke they are gonna be s***

i'd go dlp if it is an option

How long ago did you have the screen?

Can you define color seperation for me? With the way your describing it it sounds like a CRT monitor or especialy a CRT projector with seperate guns that can actualy fall out of wack with one another. PLasmas ofcoarse can not do that as they are a fixed pixel count and simply contain a gas that glows a different color based on the color the electronics send to it. There should be no way for it to start creating a actualy color seperation. Also, if the gas is F-d, its f-d it has to be replaced which is usualy refered to as replaceing the board. There is nothing to tune, unless you mean playing with the brightness/color settings?

How old are the burnt plasmas? What about the LCDs that you have seen that you don't like?

What has been going wrong with the panasonics?

You need to cosider the situation. In a Resturant, its rather hard to hang a 61" TV on a wall.

What do you consider expensive? I can get a 42" plasma of outstanding image quailty to a customer for $2500. Compared to the LCD or DLP tv that is expensive but unlike the Projection, the plasma is far brighter, detailed and less effected by ambian light.

Personal what have you compared side by side?

yestureday I compared a Sony 60" KDF60XBR950 RP and a Sony KDF70XBR950 to several other technologies and screens and the truth is that that for TV's, a 3 year old Mitsubishi WS65813 was far and away brighter, more clearly defined, and had far superior off axis viewing. Not to mention it was $1200 less.

PLasma don't burn out, they burn in. An image becomes permentaly etched into the screen so to speak. Replaceing the main panel is usualy $800+ for the person doing the service, the end price to the owener is alot higher.

Also, todays plasmas are estimating at 60,000 hour life spans. There is a radical difference from ones built today from those built 3 years ago. Also, the wuality oif that screen is of great importance. Compare a Panasonic or NEC verse a Peice of s*** Samsung, sampo (gateway), Dell, Tantung or one of 100 other cheap peice of crap pumped out of korea and the image difference is stagering.

"Going to be"?

So are they still ok?

You do a DLP what? Front projector? Rear projection TV?
Obviously, these don't offer the mounting options of the plasma or LCD screen.

All LCD's that I've seen look like ass. We use a bunch of sharps, and they are horrid. They do travel well though. We also have Marshall/Ikegami LCds and they too look nasty. The plasma in our front lobby burned in in less than a month, prolly two weeks. Mind you its on one channel constantly 24/7. The one in the lobby is a panasonic. We have a bunch of panasonics that are used in the studios for on air stuff, and they do look good. No problems with those yet. We also tested some JVC's and the screen had alot of distortion. I like CRT's. I have a $4K Ikegami 14" monitor for my TV on my workbench.

Do you use LCD screens or projectors? What whas there cost roughly?

Do you use them for video or data?

HOw old was that plasma that burned in a few weeks?
- I would assume the channel has a border or area at the bottom that is alwasy on the screen and that is what burned?

Compared to every plasma I have personally seen, granted I havn't seen them all, but all at any retail store, our KP-61HS10, that thing puts out amazing quality, especially with DVD through component. I havn't even ran any HD signals through it either. Anyways, my point being that for the price, just like LCD monitors VS CRT's, you cannot get equal quality at the same, or even ballpark, price.

If you get teh chance, go to a decent store like a tweeter or something like that. Take a look at the different technologies. I think you will see things much differently.

I am not fallowing you with the LCD and CRT monitor statement. Do you mean that a CRT monitor for a computer will be a better display per cost typicly then an LCD?

We use screens for video monitoring, little 5.6" ones that cost over $1500! The plasma out front is like 2-3 years old. So it's an older techology. I'm sure the new ones are better, and if you aren't using them for constant display, they will be OK. As much as I hate LCD's they are great for computer monitors! No flicker!

Craig, when I say "color seperation" I mean't thats as general description. I was having trouble defining green's and blues. It was over-saturating everything and was extremely inaccurate. Granted, I had a lot of usage hours on it, but every pioneer elite I've seen with similar usage hours is suffering from the same problems..

they have only been installed for about a month, but with plasmas record of losing brightness over time and the added factor of cigarette smoke and them being on 14 hours a day i am willing to bet they dont hold up well

i dont have a track record with any of them, but i think the smoke will kill most all of them, i think a glass screen(cleaned regularly) and a sealed cabinet(except for exhaust fans) will help alot though

like you mentioned in another post mitsu is a great brand, my 40" tube from 95 is still my main monitor and i love it

good luck:)
