Trailblazer SS AWD ....Still a Mazda Junkie Though.
Ok....I have the Spec Stage 3+ Cluthch that will be going in the Pro...Quite aggressive if you ask me.

Now....Here is the Dilemma.

I have a Fidanza Flywheel....7lb'er That I was planning on putting in....But I am not sure If I really want to do that.

Yet I hate to run the Stocker...Which is an Unknown weight....I will however be weighing it tonight.

The Aluminum will rev very fast....But on the FLip side....WIll Also Slow the Car down faster as well as there is less rotational Mass.

It will also like be a nit tricky to Get smooth engagement out of such a light flywheel without feather the clutch out of the hole at a higher RPM.

The only other option is the True JDM Mazdaspeed Flywheel which is said to be about 18Lbs....And this is not the one in the MSP.
THe One in the MSP is the Same as the OEM P5 one.

So.....Which would you run?

  • Stock (? lbs.)
  • Fidanza (7.5lbs.)
  • True JDM Mazdaspeed (18lbs.)

i machined the lobes off of the stock flywheel. turfburn suggested i do this. he did the same with his flywheel.

"It's a machining operation. On the back of your stock flywheel there are big cast iron lobes that add weight to the assembly. They are way out toward the edge of the flywheel so they don't provide any major structure. I had my machine shop machine them off so the back of the flywheel is all roughly level. Then I had the flywheel re-balanced and re-surfaced on the front. You basically end up with a lighter weight brand new flywheel for less than replacing it.

That's about it!

later,

Steve"

I had already posted an Inquiry about this as thats exactly what the JDM Flywheel has done..I looked for a shop locally to do this..but as of yet..I cannot find one.

SO I am left with the current options.

I already had the stocker Turned...so I would just have to Machine the rear areas you speak of...But thats easy to get done..FInding a qualified place to balance it is another issue.
Any suggestions?

Who did you use out of curiousity?

i found a local reputable machine shop. they are called keeland automotive.

Fidanza and havent looked back since.....very streetable flywheel.

Good thread on the flywheels :) --> HERE

SO Citizen...Who did you get your CLutch from?

I have been thinking for a while about getting a DIfferent Setup than the SPec..But as of Now I have that Uber Expensive Spec sitting in the basement just waiting to go on.

Not sure If I want to use it..I have heard some Controversy on it...and the link you provided was the Same 'ol.

If I am gonna change..I have about a week to make up my mind....Its getting down to "Do or Die" time for me.

I don't think 7lbs. is the way to go with high boost..traction is hard enough having to ease into the pedal. I hit 17psi around 3800 any sooner I'd be sitting still!

Its funny...I go to Clutchmaster site....They only list a Stage 1,3 and 4 for the protege...No 2 or 2R?

I am used to low traction..I want this to be one hell of a roll car...This is where driver comes into play.
I am a pretty good driver....I would Say Far Better than an Average Drive ...and still better than most....So I can drive..thats for sure.

I like my Fidanza, it just takes a little getting used to. Definitely get a SS clutch line (sure you have one tho), it made a world of difference in ease of use.

Yup..Got a Goodridge already...Also Have SS Brake lines as well.
You name it..I likely have it.

Was in the same situation, needed info fast on whats the best "streetable" clutch/flywheel to get. I purchased my Exedy S1 & Fidanza combo from Ken @ PG....great pricing as usual, got it quickly after letting him know i needed it asap.

Everything is holding up fine after 20k+ miles with these items (along w/ the SS clutch line and welded LSD).....revs move quick, nothing I cant control @ WOT. Just takes some adjustments at first.....and the clutch grabs firm with conservative & spirited driving. Havent dyno'd what power im making on 11+ psi but ill try to hop on one soon.

He asked where i got mine, so maybe he doesnt wanna put down stupid high numbers (dunno)

how much torque are you gonna have forcefed?
Not Sure....
LEts see..I am Running Oliver long rods,CP Low Comp pistons, mildly ported head, Stock cams (for now), MAM Exhaust Mani, GT28RS, 565cc's , 626 Intake Mani,Microtech for management.
New Stock MSP Tranny with a Welded LSD.

That pretty much the main setup.

I am not sure I followed what this meant? (dunno)

clutch master stage II r and fidanza fly = butter
This is the Clutch I was referring to...Sorry Citizen.
I thought it was you runing the Stage IIR....But its Azian6er.

I just want a nice Streetable Clutch that will Grab and wont let go until you tell it to.

But at the same time...They say the SPec is noisy.

I will say I have never hear a Squeky CLutch..Unles all of the complaints are Squeks from the TO Bearing...That would make perfect sense there.

well its all gonna be decided on what boost you decide to run. the only reason why i asked was because you showed interest in the exedy stage 1 (but i now see you did not mean to).

i was going to say it would probably not meet your goal. apparently it can hold "300-330 ft/lbs torque capacity," and im assuming that is not to the wheels. So if you factor in the 10-15 percent drivetrain loss, you will be above the recommended specs if you are looking for 300+wtq.
