Left it running..

I recently did something stupid but i was preoccupied so whatever anyway, I went to work the other day parked grabbed my stuff (thought i shut off the engine) closed the door pressed the lock button on the remote while walking away and went on with my day untill a coworker asked why my car was running....soo i went out to the car and sure enough it was running, doors unlocked waiting for someone to take it.
So i now know that when the car is running there is no warning sound outside of the vehicle if you walk away with the keys, and you cant lock the doors...nice design... our other car that was keyless would beep like crazy if you got out and left it running. I took it to the dealer and they were surprised that there wasnt a warning sound outside the car, but said there was no fix for it either.

Why don't you press the Lock button twice to hear the beep and make sure it's locked - and if you don't hear the sound then something's wrong? That could be a workaround..

Definitely a little weird. If I leave the car when it's running (and have my key on me) the car beeps 3-5 times. Same scenario, if I try to unlock/lock any of the doors it beeps rapidly for 10 or so seconds. I have GT w/ tech so I'm not sure if that makes the difference.

It beeps at you from the inside if you remove the key fob from the cabin, so i'm not surprised you didn't hear it after you closed the doors. I am surprised however, that you could take the key fob away from the car entirely and the car didn't automatically shutdown as a safety/anti-theft measure.

But how could anyone not have in their routine to shut it down? And even not notice its still running. Beats me!

Yes, myGT w/tech pkg does the same as you described ^. Other CX-5 owners, is it the same?

I'm not suprised that it doesn't turn off automatically when you walk away, it's well designed and works like other premium cars with this feature.

Don't think you're the only one, definately pulled this off during dinner at chilis the other day....glad it was still there.

I did something similar where I didn't completely turn off the accessory's (first push of button) with the engine off and the next morning I had a completely dead battery. I learned from that experience though and make sure the ignition is completely off before I leave the vehicle now.

Just to clarify for everyone. The car will beep if you have the proximity remote (gt tech package) but all other cars dont have sensors to know where your key fob is and wont beep for you.

I know what you guys mean. The wife and I were going to the store the other day and I am driving. I drop her off in front of the store while I park the car. I dont quite get in the parking space properly and notice it after I shut off the car. I go to restart it and find out that the car started from the Key fob in her purse. I cant restart the car because I left my keys at home. This keyless ignition thing definitely takes a while to get used to.

I have the sport, base package, and it beeps at me inside the cabin if the key is removed from the immediate vicinity.

Yep, it will beep at you inside from the dash, inside the car, but that will hardly help alert you if you have somehow remembered to close the door.

I think that what is needed is some sort of external notification, like the horn doing a few short honks when you have walked away with the ignition on.

You should be able to go into Door Locks in the Settings menu and turn up the alert volume. I have mine set on high and can definitely hear it when I leave the car and it's still running.

So effectively with GT and tech pack if I walk away from car idling then a thief can take it?

Yes, just like any other car.

In the case of GT w/tech package, if you walk away with key fob in your pocket you will get warning beeps, if you choose to ignore the warning beeps, the car will continue to idle. If somebody steals the unattended idling car, they will have no way to restart it once shut down. This is typical keyless setup common on premium cars, my Lexus operates same way.

Would have been nice if it shut down when theif touches the brakes. Like my old Clifford alarm of 10 years ago.

I'm sure they thought of that, and thought of the many reasons why nobody does that today (including the premium automakers who have had this feature for years).

that's what I do. I did the walking off with it in accessory mode once. Now I always hit the button twice to hear it honk. The door locks aren't loud enough like my old car so if I'm a couple steps away I can't hear them lock as well so the honk is nice.
