it's got a sweet spot, that's for sure... coming from RWD cars, the speed is quite a bit different... first and second are pretty tricky in mine, even with little to no mods.... i think a stickier set of just a bit wider tires would help a lot...
get the feather out quick, and have the RPMs matched to the traction you are getting, and it will flat SCOOT. at a track, you have a bit more consistency, so you should be able to get it figured out...
on a smooth asphalt road (less traction), in first or second gear, ours will confuse the traction control, and just light the tires up... no kidding. does anyone else have this happen? if you get it right on a good concrete road, it grips, and just flies out of second into third.... it's a lot of fun.
make sure you aren't running too much or too little tire pressure, prepare to stiff arm it to keep it straight as it fights for traction, get the clutch all the way out as soon as you can, and be sure to shift before it gets to the dead spot. which is VERY quick in first gear...
like my old nova, going from first to second, i like to pull on it in first a bit, just before the quick lift-shift-stab. aiming the shifter into second.
the hard part is judging how much traction you are getting. i have found mine will hook up better with another big guy like me riding. it seems to even it out a bit.
i don't launch mine hard. i just think it is punishing the drivetrain for no reason... i just try to get into third as quickly as possible!! but at the track, go for it!
