Last 3 tanks 36.3 MPG, 36.5 MPG, 35.3 MPG, with an Auto

Just took an 1800 mile round trip with the AWD/Auto. 2 people, 1 70lb dog, Tons of camping gear. We drove about 70-75 mph and got an average of 32.5 mpg on the way up there. That's 1.5 better than the spec sheet. When on the way home we did much closer to 80 and received a huge hit which brought us down to 30.3 mpg. Driving 65mph vs 75mph is a HUGE difference. On a 180 mile trip earlier I kept it to 60-65 mph and got 34.5 when I'm rated for 31 mpg by the manufacturer. It truly is how you drive it. Like CX-SV, here in DC I'm sometimes forced to go 70-80 mph to be safe. This vehicle blows me away with its fuel efficiency.

It's really great to hear of the great MPG numbers so many of us are getting. Keep the reports coming.

OP: If you're going to all that trouble to see what the CX-5 is capable of mpg-wise, I'm surprised you aren't doing actual mileage calculations rather than assuming your dash readout is accurate!

Why do you believe he doesn't check the numbers with manual calculations?

Well hes doesn't mention that he does and the attached image is of his dash readout. One can reasonably assume that (like many others here!) he's relying only on the computer.

Like many others here, V8toilet has been entering his fill-ups into Fuelly.com. If you scroll up to the first post on this page (or any page he has posted on) you can click his Fuelly signature and view his entire MPG history.

Think I have you beat V8 ;)

last weekend 500 mile trip from Knoxville, TN to Washington D.C. Did 65 mph the whole way with cruise control on. A couple places dipped to 55 but mostly the speed limit stayed between 55 and 65. A/C was on periodically, maybe 40-50% of the trip. Drafted behind a couple of semis. Think I got like 425 miles on that tank.

correction: I just saw that pic of the 40.7 you posted. Dang....

sorry I really win.......

Try that now with most of the diesel/ fuel used or with 318+ miles like plemieux did. You almost have a full tank.

Crap! I just noticed he does too. ;)

thing is you could reset counter at any point when the fuel is low, for instance. or reset your trip meter before you do your journey to fool people. I could have done that on near empty and just filled up. the fuel gauge is a red herring. I did 100 mile round trip for 68.7 If i'd been carrying less fuel it would have been higher.

to be honest I think i could get better again. BUT that would be sooo.... boring.

I might try in September when the temps are warm enough but I don't need air-con. The engine should be more run-in by then too.

until then ..... zoom ... zoom

Now that is amazing! Do you have an auto or stick? Is that number in imperial gallons, which I think would be 57.25 US gallons or 57 mpg?

Does the diesel model hold the same amount of fuel as the petrol models? If so, I imagine you must have a number of tanks that have beat my recent 506 miles on one fill-up?

My car is the manual version but my last 10 tanks have come to an average of 39.6 mpg. I just wish it wasn't so windy here all of the time, my one tank where it was almost no wind at all I ended up getting 42.5 mpg with the same commute.

That's really excellent!

Not only are you getting really good MPG but you have some of the least expensive gas in the country.

Not sure by how much though. The cheapest gas stations in my area are $3.599 per gallon which isn't even usable for me since it's 85 octane. 87 octane is mid grade here and the cheap stations have it priced at $3.699 gallon. I get ethanol free gas though for $3.749

We don't want to steal your thunder so didn't post our record ranges. 506 isn't hard to beat at all with a little care.

Hi Mike,

the FWD tank is 2 litres smaller than the AWD, I have had a few 500mile + tanks and I did have a range of over 600 miles on the computer when filling the tank up full but by that time I was totally bored, put my foot down and never checked. However I was rather amused after a 100 round trip with no fill-ups my range was 5 miles MORE than when I started. In all honesty it's easy to see than happen if you do a lot of urban driving then take a longer trip on motorway at around 65 mph or so. The range guide at least has some entertainment value :)

Thanks for the feedback.

One thing about the range remaining estimate - it is adaptive. This means that if you are in city traffic jams, idling a lot, etc. it might show that your range remaining is only 150 miles, but if you drive out of the city and start motoring down the highway, it will adapt to the new conditions and after awhile it will be estimating your range remaining based upon your new driving mode and may read considerably higher than before you left the city.

Can you think of a better way to implement this tool? I suppose the range remaining could be stated as a range of miles instead of an absolute figure but even that would be subject to exceptional conditions.

what would be cool if you had an instant range as well as average range. same idea as with the mpg readings. My old kia did take into account previous mpg but started at that figure and never increased it. it would stop decreasing it so much if I suddenly drove super efficiently. That worked well when it said I have 80 miles range with 90 to get home, you kinda realize more if you need a refuel before you journey ends. (If you know what I mean.)

the cx-5 told me I was going to be short, then it said ,no probs you'll make it finally ending up with - nah no chance. Should have filled up when it said i'd be ok, cos the fuel was cheaper at that point!
