Key and Remote

I have only one key and remote to my 2004 mazda 3. Do I have to go to the dealership to get an extra key and remote programed? Thanks

Yes, the dealer will have to program in a second key for you since you only have one. The key itself shouldn't cost any more than $20... and if it does just order it from someone like onlinemazdaparts. The programming fee seems to vary but the average is somewhere around $75. Some people have gotten it free but they were friends with either a tech or the service manager. My suggestion is buy two new keys. Have the dealer program one for you and then program the third yourself. This way should you lose one (or it's stolen, etc.) you can just buy a new third key and program it in yourself without having to go back to the dealer for it.

You can program a new remote yourself, no need to pay the dealer for it. All you need is a single working key and any remotes you want to work (whether they already work or not).

Also since you have a '04 you could get one of the flip key/remotes. The remote from the Mz6 sedan works, however it has a trunk release button that won't do anything. Doesn't bother me and I love my flip key. :)

The key half of the flip remote is the same between every Mazda with a flip key.... just like the regular key will work in any Mazda. I don't think the remote from the Mz5 can be programmed to the 3's computer. There is a compatible remote from a Mx5 that doesn't have the extra button but it's about 3x as expensive.

Honestly I like having the extra button because it makes the panic button half the size and that way it doesn't get hit in my pocket nearly as much.

I thought '04 - '06 3's could work with any flip key... and in '07 the 3's were changed... I might be wrong... most likely am.

The key half is the same between all year/models. The remote is the tricky part. There are only two or three flip remotes which work with the '04-'06 Mz3's computer. They changed the computer in '07 (for US models) and there aren't any flip remotes that will talk with that computer. There are flip remotes that work with '07+ Canadian models however they don't work with the US 3.... someone even tried installing the KEU from the Canadian one and it didn't work either.
