K&n Cai?

If you check out this page:

There are two engine shots with a CAI intake that has the K&N logo on it.

To me, this intake looks like the eBay BOMZ intake with an extension.

There is a different shot of it here:

it looks more polished in this shot, but that could just be lighting.

What appeals to me about this one is that you could remove the extension for winter and make it a SRI, then when summer hits, convert back to CAI.

Thoughts on this? Anyone know pricing for this item?

I am sick of looking at CAI vs SRI threads, as I try to decide what I want to do. There is so much conflicting (mis)information out there and I cant seem to find concrete, trustable dyno's of them to truly compare the results.

Cost is an issue, if the gains are minimal. The BOMZ would do nicely for the price if there is a gain to be had. The worse case would be that there is a loss. If that is definetely NOT the case, I may just go for the BOMZ.

Otherwise its between the K&N and Injen with the K&N leading if the CAI to SRI conversion is a possibility.

What about getting the BOMZ and an extension to make it like the K&N, how easy/cheap would it be to get the right piece of pipe for that? Has this been done before.

Thanks

Robin

FYI you wiil not lose power with the BOMZ SRI. I've got one and have no complaints about it. As for the pricing, IIRC it's upwards of $200, when it's released, which I don't believe it has been yet.

As for the extension, I don't know about that. Havn't looked into it.

I just ordered an AEM SRI..
The reason I chose to go SRI is I dont want to move the coolant bottle. Its not realy a big deal I just dont want to do it besides I dont think the air temp diffrence is significant. Today it was 103 degres out so its not realy "cold air" induction....
I looked for the K&N the price I found was $400.00 bit pricy. The ones you get on e-bay thay dont tell you if thay are made of aluminium or steel.. Aluminum is excelant at conducting heat away from the tube(it will stay cooler). I dont think you will get aluminium for $30....

The one I got said it was aluminum. :D I remembered the K&N was outragous. Just didn't remember how outragous it was. :D

there is also something called alumanized... Thats just steel plated with aluminium.. its sort of a marketing thing saves money.

Here's one thing I haven't thought about until my last oil change.

What are we doing to our oil quality w/ our intakes? Are we letting more particles in?

I have spent many hours designing a ram air system on my mp3 similar to ones on the new corvettes.

The advantages on a CAI system vs a SRI are greater. The cooler the air the more compressed it is and the more of it the engine gets the faster it runs.

My intake system is a simple design
air duct behind the grill which funnels the air into the pipe which is run straight with no bends (harsh bends slow the flow) in it except for the slight bend that leads to the intake manifold. The faster the car goes the more hp it gains consecutivly as the air is packed is creating a positive pressure. If you monitor the air pressure stock vs ram air or cai you will see that the pressure goes from negative to 0 or sometimes above 0 if your system is designed right therefore creating (and i use this term loosly) boost. But we are talking sri vs cai i got carried away, on a hot day sri will be sucking in extremly hot air and the performance will decrease alot more noticeably. As for CAI you will not really notice any deacreases as temp rises as you would with SRI. Stick some thermometers in the cai and sri area and look at the drastic difference.. that difference is your cars performance

stick with good brand name filters, there are some out there that let to many particles in, ive heard about it somewhere on the board, the sizing of the holes being so big that there was a recall on the filter or somthing..
