Update... Pics on page 3

OK, for 3 years I have been reading these threads and hoping that I would not be posting one. Tonight I was out for a drive with a buddy on a road we have never been on before. I was just cruzing, like 50%... Speed limit on the street that I was on was 35 I think, but it had some tight corners. The asphalt had been built up enough so that it was like a 4"-5" drop to the dirt on the shoulder. I came to a left hander and my right front tire bit the edge of that shoulder and pulled the car into a ditch on the side of the road. The nose hit the bottom first and I did a complete cartwheel and landed on the drivers door pointing the other way. At the time of the accident, I was going approximately 25 MPH. 0 of 4 airbags deployed. But the condition of the car is not good. I would bet that it is a total loss... Every body panel is wrinkled. The paramedics had to rip the passenger door off of the hinge. The passenger seat where my friend was sitting ended up in a mostly reclined position and the seat frame was twisted so that the bottom was flat, but the seat back was canted toward the drivers side. It knocked the wind of of my friend, and when he caught his breath, he couldn't get out of his seat due to abdominal pain. The medics took him to ER, which I just got back from, and it looks like he just pulled a muscle in his abs. No internal bleeding or anything.

I should be getting a call from the claims adjuster Wednesday or Thursday, but I guess it is done. Good news is that I have Gap insurance so my loan will be paid off. we will see if I can get any extra for wheels, springs, shifter, sway bar, etc... This is usually a problem, but worth a shot.

If I can get back into it I am going to swap out the MP3 ECU for the stock. I may have an ECU for sale in the near future. As far as the rest of the stuff, I am not going to do anything about it. Good thing I spent the last two years parking in the back of the lot to avoid door dings. She was going to turn two on Saturday...

I actually hope it is totalled. There is a 2001 MX-5 SE that is for sale nearby that I have had my eye on...

I miss her already.

wow, glad you're ok man. weird to think that so much damage can be caused by such a low speed. i guess it's just the way the car whipped around and all. good luck with your insurance.

s*** man this SUCKS! I hope you and your friend are ok, thats most important...

**** man, youre having a rough day. You def. need to go and get some sympathy sex and a miata. that would help drastically!

If you need anything dude, just use the forum... they tend to be pretty helpful in crunch time.
(friday)

Usually when I am down, I get in my car and go for a drive... The forum isn't a bad second choice... The first question out of the Highway Patrol officer's mouth was "any drinking going on tonight?" I was so glad that I could answer NO. Not that I ever do, but that sure would have been a cake topper, huh?

Yeah, we wern't going that fast, but I think the way it landed did a lot. It felt to me like we bounced off of the bumper and were completely airborn before landing on the ground. It kinda rolled from the passenger side of the bumper all the way across to the drivers side, and then landed. There is a basketball sized dent in the rear roof, and a crease all the way across the roof. The trunk is shoved up so that it won't open, and the passenger side door was bent all the way forward... I will try to take pics if I can...

yeah driving is a venting tool for me out here too... I got nothing out here except the wife and sometimes i need my car to deal with everything mentally.

Whew! Glad you're okay. Please install a Hard Dog roll bar first thing when you pick up the Miata.

sorry to hear your loss but you and your friend are Ok, that's all that matters.

Good Luck with the insurance claim.

Good thing no one got injured seriously...

Exactly. Seems to be the story with these Protege's. I'll take that any day.

Next car will hopefully be a 2001 Miata Special Edition. There is a blue one for sale with tan leather and 6 speed nearby. Hard Dog would be ordered the same day. The guy that was in the car with me has a 90 Miata and the first thing we did was the roll bar...

yeah no kidding... after hearing about this and seeing Dr. Sound's wreck pics, I am convinced Mazda puts their cars in invisible protective bubbles.
