mazda 3 2004
i just bought a 2004 mazda 3 2.3L with 110xxxmiles. At first everything seemed to be great but then i started getting some problems along the way hope you guys can assist me in the right direction.

1)After 300 miles of driving it the check engine light came on so i went to autozone and they told me it was the coolant temperture sensor. I asked the guy how much it would be to fix it and he told me $400, i dont know if he was trying to make some extra cash or he was being serious. Is this a common issue and is there something i can do becouse $400 is way too much for me right now.

2)The second thing that is bugging me out is that i cant get the headlights to turn off automatically after i turn of the car. The car came with hid's and the battery died already 2 times on me because of forgetting to shut it of manually. Is there anyway i can get it to shut off on its own or im always going to have to stay on top of it?

3) Also how come the car when its warmed up and everything and comes to a stop idle at rpm levels around 500? thats bugging the hell out of me. Do i need to get a new battery or something?

That sensor is $26.29 at AdvanceAutoParts and depending on the design on the Mazda3 it could be swapped without losing much coolant. This should only take made 1-2 hours of labor at a garage.

Most normal cars require you to turn your lights on and off manually. Luxury cars and now newer cars have auto on lights. Now with your car it should chime if you leave your lights on and open the door. If not there might be a fuse blown or something electrically wrong.

The car should idle at 750 rpm, but a dirty egr valve could potentially cause this.

Did you get the car from a dealer? If so did you purchase a warrenty? If yes...Take it to them

If you bought from dealer, they usually give you 30 days warranty regardless... Take it back.

1) +1 thats about right

2) its bad/wrong wiring and/or just wire a on off switch for them

3) may want to clean/check your MAF sensor, intake, EGR, or use some fuel system cleaner. Also if you have a grounding/condenser kit your idle will sit between 650 to 750ish

yea i didnt not purchase a warrenty which i highly regret but

i just changed the whole coolant temperature system at the shop from my mechanic and he charged me 250$ and since then drove about 200 miles and all seems to be running well ,,,,, i figured out that the way the person that had the car before me the way he setup the hid's was to turn of manualy according to my mechanic,,,, and the low rpm running was because all the power the hid's use not sure what level k but they r pretty damn strong so every time i turn off the lights the rpm slightly goes up to around 650-700

The HID's aren't wired up to the auto on/off? that's just, well, wierd...I am not sure if that much draw is normal for HID's....Mine doesn't do that? Even if you were running 55w D2S' it shouldn't mess with the system like that.....maybe it's a ballast issue, and wiring as stated before....As for everything else, glad your car is running better.
