Just got a 2016.5 CX-5 - Tips, Tricks and MPG

Minor scratches can often be taken out of plastic with a heat gun. I’ve done it before on other vehicle but you have to be very ..very careful to not make problem worse. Make sure heat gun doesn’t overheat plastic too much to cause further damage. You can find other hits online on the topic..

My ‘15 2.5L AWD average around 26MPG these days 80% Freeway/ 20% City

Only time I am near 20 is when towing a trailer

Turbo folks, how is your FE impacted loaded vs lightly loaded?

Yesterday we drove 110 miles with five adults in the car. Terrain was hilly and one slowdown. We got 30.4 MPH according to the LOM.

I aired up the tires to 35 PSI before we left. Drove on CC when possible 65 to 70 and the speed limit on the secondary roads.

That sounds like good fuel economy fully loaded..

I read a rule of thumb, for every 100 pounds it changed FE 1 MPG. I estimate we had 775# in the car including baggage or 550# more than with one person.

The cars PB FE is 33.5 MPG with estimated 425# load on a 300 mi trip over small rolling hills. That is 350# less so it follows the rule of thumb.

Run 93 Oct with Stabil fuel additive and other mods.

Am I the only one who thinks the rpms are too high while cruising at 80 mph?

Too high of a speed = too high of an RPM. a simple and entirely logical correlation.

6th gear is already super long for normal highway speeds. Makes no sense to gear it any shorter, just for excessive speed.

Am I the only one who thinks the rpms are too high while cruising at 80 mph?
Has anyone gone with taller tires to bring them down a bit?
no I have a 2023 turbo and often cruise at 80-85mph and have not thought rpms were too high. mine redlines at 6000+ so I don't see an issue with cruising at 2700rpms. heck I will knock it back to sport mode when I go to pass.

I have done several roadtrips loaded to the gills and never noticed much difference in mpg but did in acceleration. Just got back from a 2400 mile road trip thru Montana, ND and Minn and back for christmas and what I found is my best tank of gas was on 87 and that was also my last tank of gas. I filled up an empty tank when I left with 91 non ethanol and ran non ethanol 91 the entire trip except for my last tank I used 87 with up to 10% ethanol and that was the best mpg. I tried to use Cenex 91 non ethanol the entire trip and all but two fill ups was able to use it. When traveling I run the tank pretty much to empty.

Maybe it's a turbo thing. My turbo diesel truck FE doesn't change until it has about 5,000 pounds in it...

I'm going to try a few tanks of E free in the near future and compare.

Assuming you're in 6th gear there, that's considerably shorter than my 2015 Mazda 6 NA.

I'm going about 160 at 3000rpm. Indeed the cx5 seems geared shorter.

Interesting...don't get me wrong, I'm not concerned with engine problems, just fuel mileage. Agree with your 6k redline assessment. Have you noticed your mpg at that speed compared to say, 10 mph slower? Some would be aero and some rpm related...

If I were looking to get the best mpg I would drive 65-70mph but I rarely do that. 75-85mph is the speeds that are the norm here. I am happy with 28-30mpg I get at the higher speeds. If I am bucking a big head wind which is common in Montana It will drop to 25-26mpg.
