Protege5
Hi Folks

I am one of you !

After a few years on a 318ti, I finally sold it for something with 5 doors. I miss the RWD but love the weighted steering and great handling
from my Protege5, here she is BTW, Wife calls her Peggy-Sue.

So far the car runs great, had to change a few Links to stop the 'CLopIng' everytime I go over a bump which was starting to seriously piss me off, it was a cheap fix (cost me around 50$ in parts for all three screwed up links)

Belts are squeeling so that's next, parts are ordered, car has 48 000 miles and is pristine apart from the 'typical' extremely minor rear arch rust I'll take care of at some point when it stops raining this summer in Montreal.

I ordered new pads and rotors ( cost me about 100$ with shipping) because I've noticed that, aside from the brakes being worn, there is a 'clicking sound' when the car is rolling, I'm hoping it makes for an easy fix as the click has been driving me a bit nuts.

Worst part is my mechanic can't even hear it ! and he's checked the tire and wheel well inside out.

Anyone ever experience something like that ? Lemme know !

I have an odd clicking sound coming from what I think is the driver's front wheel. The best way I can describe the sound would be like two large plastic gears turning against each other. Speed dependent, not at all RPM dependent, not at all affected by applying brakes (or not applying them.) Sounds like the sort of thing where I'd ask a passenger in the car if they hear it and they'd be like, hear what?

I'd think it was something odd with the wheel bearing if it hadn't been replaced like a year ago.

Sound like what you're talkin about?

I had the same sound a couple of weeks ago. It turned out to be the dust shield rubbing up against the rotor. The edge of the rotor it all uneven with rusty spots that stick out further at some spots. That's why it 'clicked' with every rotation of the wheel.

I have been having a very similar problem! It is coming from my rear left wheel. Doesn't seem to replicate itself every time I drive. It also seems to go away if i hold the brake, but keep on the throttle to maintain the same speed. I am hoping to get some work done on my car this week and I will have to check it out.

Do you think it could be something not visible just by looking over all the parts? As in I would need to measure everything very precisely to know for sure?

didn't think about the wheel bearings since the car is relatively low mileage, I'm changing the drive belts, rotors and pads tomorrow, we'll see what things sound like after that, I think I can find the bearings locally for about 20$

Good one, living in Quebec the dustshield is probably finished on the car

Did you find the source of the noise, I have the same annoying noise on my P5, changed links and bushings and nothing...

Check your pads,... When I replaced my front calipers,... I noticed that the pads were kind loose in the caliper bracket. The pads are held in the caliper with a spring clip on each end and they remain "floating". They can be kind of rattle around and make noise. Sometimes the pads are installed with silicone on the back of each pad to stop the sloppiness and help prevent squealing. My pads were rattling because the metal backing plate of the pad had rusted and the silicone was no longer attached (it rusted off).

With your wheel off,... reach into the caliper and see if your pads feel "loose". Some silicone might help.

I just did both front bearings and calipers. I just ripped off the old dust shields figuring they don't do all that much.

I would have replaced them if I would have thought of it when I placed my order. The steering knuckle has to be removed to replace the dust shield and it was all apart for the bearings so it would have been a good time to do it.

They don't have the "splash shields" at RockAuto but I found them here: (part #9)

I'm going to have to do the same on my 2003 Protege. I bought it brand new, and have put 123,000 miles on the car. The wheel bearings are starting to make noise, but since I'm due for new rotors and pads, I'm going to try to tackle it all at the same time. I also have the rear wheel arch rust, but other than that, I don't think there's any other rust. I swore I'd never have a car with rust on it, but after living in Kansas City for five years, the car had other plans.

Check out my wheel bearing thread.

I used this How-To to get it done.

DON'T buy EBay bearings like I did. The seals on them are useless. Get the SKF from Rockauto for $29.95 each. They are the only ones saying they are "sealed".
Spend the extra money on good bearings. It's not the price of the part but the huge effort to install new ones. I'm expecting to have to do mine again in a year or two.

Keep your lower control arms in mind when you do the work,... the ball joints may be worn. Check your calipers too.

I ended up doing all of that.
