July sales way down

The writing is on the wall for the 5, unfortunately. Sales of the 5 did not crack 1000, at only 956 (down 48% from July 06's 1840). This puts it below MPV sale levels of last year. A real shame, and I don't think the December deliveries of the 08 are going to help soon enough. Rondo sales for July were 2222.

[curiously, the MPV had -2 (that's negative two) sales for July 07; I guess lemon buy-backs]

Well, Mazda's whole "Advertise simply by word of mouth" (direct)strategy does not seem to be paying off. Also, my mother went looking for one and was told that their was only 1 5M Touring in a four state area. I think their production numbers of the 5speed were far too low, and they made way too many automatics. Combined with every time I turn on the television there is another Rondo advertisement and they are doing their best to damn this vehicle to obscurity. (bang)For God's sake, at least advertise the car, if nothing else.

I guess their idea of not doing a big print ad campaign has back-fired. If I were Mazda I would get the 5 out there in a BIG way. Nevermind how much better a vehicle the 5 is than the Rondo (the 2.7 Delta motor is a horrible POS). BTW July figures were down but not because of me! Purchased mine 7-4-07!

So much for that Mazda5 Quicksilver promotional campaign huh......(braindead

I'm also seeing lots of Rondos around my neighborhood. They look a bit too bulky for my liking, but people are buying them because they represent good value for the money.......

I'm trying to get my brother and sister-in-law to trade in (up!) their decade old CR-V for a Mazda5, but they're not planning to buy until 2008. Wish me luck...

I hope I'm wrong! The 08 improvements are most of what is needed (for me, though, ESC is a MUST HAVE; would have liked to see direct injection also). This is just one month, and hopefully things will turn around. But time will tell...

They only sold 1187 MX-5's as well, does that make it a bad car? :) I do agree though that it's troubling to see the lack of money put into advertising ... get the word out, Mazda!!!

I think that should be "appears to represent good value for money"! Mazda DOES need to get the word out, but they are busy pushing the 7 and 9 instead. I think North America is less enthused about practicality and more into status.

Yeah, you're right with respect to the status thing in NA. The NA market is directed towards the big SUVs and not the mini-mini vans as is the case in Europe and Asia. I often wonder how the Mazda5's global sales rate year over year.

However, if you look at the Rondo and Mazda5 dollar for dollar and feature for feature you would have to agree that you get more features for your $ with the Rondo. Of course quality with the Kia is always a concern, but today most buyers are looking for 'bang for the buck' as a primary option and quality as a second option especially if leasing a vehicle, and unfortunately the Kia gives them the advantage over the Mazda5. Mazda needs to beef up the options on the '5' and lower their price to better compete with the Kia.

Having said all that I'm a proud Mazda5/Mazda MPV/Mazda323 owner, and I would not buy the Kia, or any Kia for that matter, over a Mazda.

Just my 2c.

Just out of curiousity, does any one know what the proportion of the sales are public vs. fleet sales for either the Mazda5 or Rondo?

No rebates on most 2007 models. That is what's slowing Mazda down right now.

Unless you're a Mazda salesperson, I can't figure out what the concern is here... you guys want a bajillion other 5's on the road so you can feel like you're driving just another Matrix? (scratch)

And I can't imagine that they won't continue with the 08's for those of you prospective buyers that might be worrying over this...

Car sales were down in July. Mazda wasn't alone.
Yup, here are all of the cars that had the same or bigger percentage declines than the Mazda5 during July 07 [not counting those being phased out by other models (like the replacement of the 500 by the Taurus); at least as far as the press releases I saw]:

Dodge Dakota
Acura RL
Mercury Grand Marquis
Lincoln Town Car
Jaguar X-Type

Anyway, my point is just that these numbers need to turn around, and fast for the 5, or I would doubt there will be a next generation of it here.

Well unless they bring back the MPV (I wish...), axing the 5 would mean the end of the Mazda minivan here. The 3 and 6 are the real money makers in the US and when you think about it, how many Tributes do you see (compared to Ford Escapes)? RX-8's? And good lord, I don't remember the last time I saw a B-Series truck driving around.... but they still make them year after year.

Furthermore, if my memory serves me correctly, in reverse chronological of the last time I've seen Mazda model specific commercials, it was the... 3, CX9, CX7, 6, 5, RX-8, Tribute, MX-5 (never), B-Series (never).

I'm not trying to be contentious, but if you look at the big picture, there's nothing drastic going on here. That's just my $.02. Ok, I'll shut up now :)
