I am getting a JL 8w0 to replace the stocker Kenwood subwoofer (blown) in my MSP. As I go to buy it I am given 3 ohm options (4ohm, 8ohm, 12ohm). Which one do I want? This is the quote from the site I am buying from:

IIRC 4ohm is for 1 speaker /8 ohm is for 2 / 12 if for 3
so if my logic is correct you would want the 4 ohm

here found this ...
Most 8 inch subwoofers will fit. The JL 8W3v2D2 or 8W3v2D4 are a common choice. If the factory amp is going to remain inverted then I HIGHLY suggest an 8 ohm sub. Otherwise if you are willing to relocate it then a 4 ohm sub will be a better choice and will extract all available power from the kenwood amp.
Factory replacement of the stock sub woofer and purchasing a new seperate sub woofer system are to very different things.

If you are replacing the existing sub woofer in the vehicle you need to find out the impedence of the original sub woofer. Then replace it with a subwoofer using the same impedence. Using the wrong impedence may result in a blown amplifier.

If you take your factory subwoofer to your local stereo shop. They can take some measurments of your speaker with a multi-meter and tell you which speaker to use.

Buy the 4 ohm.
The stock kenwood is an 8 ohm, in order to protect the amp in it's inverted position. As a result, you're getting maybe 65 watts to the stocker. Going to the 4 ohm, you will push about 120 watts to it.
I have been pushing a 12 inch 4 ohm Fosgate for a few weeks, big improvement.

100% right (yippy)

The 12 ohm will extract no power form the amp, the 8 will be about the same as you have now and the 4 will definitly be an improvement. I still srongly suggest moving the amp if you go with teh 4 ohm sub

The part numbers are technicly:
8W0-4
8W0-8
8W0-12

When the hell did you come to town? (confused)

I'm glad to see another big vendor around. Enjoy the audio section (boobs)

I can tell you what an 8w0-4 sounds like on the stock kenwood amp...DAMN GOOD! I'm so freakin' impressed with it. It's not up to snuff with my current setup in the car (ed 10k and JL 250/1)...but it isn't too far off. It's a damn nice setup. I have it in a home built box with the amp mounted to the rear. This setup is for my friend...gonna install it in her car soon, but it sounded great in mine.

Just don't push your amp's sensitivity (gain) up too high. the 125W is plenty for that sub...too much higher and you're gonna kill that warranty.

I went with the 8 ohm after I actually tested the resistance on the stocker. I am not reallylooking for an improvement. I was happy with the performance of the Kenwood. I just want something that won't blow after 2 months of use!!!

nothing wrong w/ going w/ the 8 ohm... i have the 8w3v2d4, wired in series for 8 ohms, and it sounds amazing compared to the stocker.
