would it be ok to install just the intake cam and not the exhaust cam? i want to upgrade the cams but there is only the intake one that i can find and was just curious. Would it throw anything off since the air coming in isnt matching the air going out? also has anyone put the j-spec cams on a MSP? what were the hp gains?

u will have no problem. Although to fully realize gains u will want to have an exhaust cam put in eventually. Preferably custom.

is there anyone that is making both cams for our cars yet? or another company that maybe just has the exhaust one?

i've heard of some people just buying the intake cam and moving their stock intake cam to the exhaust position...not sure how well that works, though.

Yeah, u can repin the intake cam to be the "mazdaspeed" exhaust cam. First though u have to get the measurements of the difference in degrees of the intake and exhaust pins. Repinning costs about $70 at a machine shop. However it may not be exact so u might have a degree of adv. or retard in the cam. Also it will need to be shim'd
the stock intake specs are
198deg duration @.050"
.344" lift
stock exhaust is
200deg duration@.050"
.323" lift
so u gain about .021" lift which is decent and will offset the duration loss. however it can be a major PITA. I tried it and the shop screwed it up and it never got done. it really makes more sense to buy a stock cam and have it hardwelded by webcams.

I wouldnt mind repinning it but there isnt a machine shop out here that I trust that much to do that. I know they would f*** up something. How would I go about getting webcams to hardweld me one?

I found mazdaspeed intake and exhaust cams at srmotorsports.com (thanks mp5smuggler). Now are those the stock cams that come in the MSP or are they aftermarket cams that mazdaspeed makes?

they are aftermarket. But honestly the gains from the "msp" exhaust cam are minimal. Also u can get the jdm intake cam from www.protege5online.com for $170. Srmotorsports is kinda shady cause technically the "mazdaspeed" exhaust cam is discontinued and they charge alot. Webcams could rework a stock cam for less than the "mazdaspeed" cam would cost and u would see much nicer gains. However u would have to specify that u have a turbo cause that effects the cam profile

how did that all turn out? I know you had problems with the timing belt. How does it feel? U might want to consider a custom exhaust cam that is fast opening and long duration/high lift. I mean u can only get so much exhaust out, turbo or not.

You don't necessarily need an exhaust cam, just because you get an intake cam though. If the FS is anything like the BP, it likes mis-matched lifts and durations. In my case, the exhaust cam has more lift AND duration.

yeah the FS does like patterned cams, however it has been shown that a larger exhaust cam has many benefits. If u want to do it right it makes sense to do both, even on a turbo.

Any dynos of gains with the CAMS? It could just move the powerband around making you think you gained power.

i have both cams(j-spec intake cam & mazdaspeed exht cam) in my boosted fs-de and it has been running strong for 8 months now.

Any cam that was made by Mazda to fit in your car will give you gains. You can be sure of that. But aftermarket cams don't always get you the gains you want. Stuff like that is almost a black art. You can engineer them to do what they're supposed to do, and all the mathematics says they will; then you drop them in and lose power. The guy who created this site http://members.aol.com/solomiata/miataCSP.html
went through 8 sets of cams to find the ones that worked for him. One gave him 181whp, but made almost no power til 7000RPM(Webcam 515s). Right now he has a combination making him 154whp, 125lb/ft of torque and he says it has a HUGE powerband. I think he's using the Boig, or Mazda Cup cams.

I'm dropping my exhaust cam into my intake, so I'll let you know if I get any gains...
