Is this dealer messing with me?

Alright so im in the process of selling my current car, should be gone by end of week. So ive been going to a honda/volvo dealer about 80 miles away for a msp. (thats as close as it gets), but i feel its wroth it. Anyways, its silver with 26k miles, and hes asking 15.9.....ive been tlaking with him and he said he can do 14.5, then i declined and said no, and he said come down with money and we can maybe discuss something else. All i can really speand/want to speand is like 13/14 grand...whats the most you've pay. BTW its in pretty good condition.

According to the black book, these cars are going for about 12,000-10,000 as a trade-in. With mark-up 14,500 seems to be an average asking price, but I think he can go lower and still make a tidy commision.

yep i think ill start off by saying 13 or nothing, then maybe go to 13.5, well see how much he wants to sell a car.

AAAAH CAR DEALERS love/hate relationship.

Ok... here's a little trick

Tell him all you can afford to spend is 13,000, but you are willing to borrow the money from your (dad/uncle/dead grandmother) to cover the taxes.

If he balks at you, ask him what he suggests, reminding him that all you have is 13,000 and need to borrow for the taxes.... if he suggest 13,500 (or something you can live with), then tell him to write it up, show you the numbers and you will call dad and see if he'll lend you the balance...

Set up Dad or a buddy to play the part... make the call right infront of him.

YOUR GOLDEN

Look dude, if the salesperson/manager knows what they are doing and you pull the "poor boy" act, they should try to simply put you in less car. You will have your most leverage for bargaining if you come in at the end of the month and are ready to buy it right then and there when you negotiate. Dealers hate nothing more when some ****** who thinks they can bargain comes in low balling when they won't even commit to buying it on the spot. What is the point of the dealer giving you a low price if you can walk out and potentially go to another dealer that day and say, "Hey I'm gettin it for $13,500 over there! What can you guys do?" So...just to review for everyone...IN GENERAL...if you want the best deal at any given dealership...1)Buy out of stock 2)Take delivery that day 3)Finance with them if feasable 4)Come in at the end of the month...last day if possible. Emphasize that you are doing all of these things during the negotiation and YOU become the manipulator. The dealership wants a done sale...they don't want to **** around with some number crunching b**** over the phone for a week only to have it fall apart after a bunch of wasted time and effort. .........IMHO.

CommieSpeed.... thats an interesting twist...

Yes, you are right, the dealer said show up with money... so I suggested show up with 13G if he takes it SHAZAM... if not its negotiation time..

I have purchased cars in the past using a very similar technique that I mentioned above, and well if the deal falls through, there are always others out there.

No harm in trying.

There are plenty of MSP for sale at $13k look in the for sale section there is a silver one for $13,250. There is a black MSP in texas for $12,900 bone stock. Dont pay more than $13k for that car. Every month prices drop for the MSP so shop around and u will find a great deal. There is a guy selling one for like 14k here on the board I dont remeber his name at this time. His car is in mint condition and has only 6k miles.

i actually just bought mine last week.. picked it up for $13,795. i traded my old 98 civic hatch and the dealer gave me $3,795 for it. the msp is titanium grey, has just under 15K miles on it.. EXCELLENT condition.. and came with an HKS Turbo Timer Type-1 already installed.

all in all, best experience i have ever had with a car dealer..

Oh, I'm sorry if I came off ass-hatty, I wasn't knockin' your method. After selling cars and being on the other side of the desk, my new mission in life is to inform others on how to booty slam the dealer fo' real. It's funny, because If I had a customer I really liked and wanted them to buy the car, I would tell them these steps and they thought I was trying to set them up to be ****** or something.
