future CX-9 owner
Hi,

I see that Mazda is offering a $1000 owner incentive for new Mazdas (specifically CX-9) but I don't own one,
so my question is if there is a way around to get this owner incentive from the dealer.

I asked them and the told me there is no way around this rebate but wanted to check if somebody have heard anything about this.

Thanks.

If you aren't in a Mazda it would be tough to see how or why they would pay it. However, if you are looking to purchase in the short term, Mazda is offering 60 months interest free financing on several models. You can still go to their web site, and click on the models in which you have an interest, and see what incentives are available on each model in your area. Pick your model, then look under the "shopping tools" tab. I just checked to make sure and they are doing a 500 buck President's day deal. That's half what you are seeking - go from there. Personally, when I bought my CX (4 years ago) I found the dealer got serious as a heart attack after I became a pre-qualified prospect sitting in front of him! No, I don't work for Mazda, in fact I don't work for anybody except my wife who does not understand the concept of retirement!

I will just throw this out - car sales personnel are commission compensated, and they really don't have time to be jerked around - they'll know when a suspect becomes a prospect. Oh yeah, I did a second career in the insurance industry, at corporate level. Same deal.

Now get out there and go buy some Zoom Zoom!

I'm totally into buying a Mazda and right away, that is not the problem.

If you want to know the whole story, some dealers in my area are offering $4500 discount + $1000 owner loyalty discount for a new CX-9 GT. I told the dealer that I would buy it right away if I could get the additional $1K discount but he said that there was no way around that rebate. So that's why I asked in this forum if somebody has received it in the past (without being a mazda owner) or heard something about it.

Thanks for your advice.

Something to think about is that instead of the 1K owner loyalty you could always look at adding something(s) to the car that would add up to the 1K incentive.
It is not always about the Cash but you can have them add a accessory or two that may not be on the car that you may be interested in.
They may agree to that in lieu of the Owner incentive, as they can write that off as part of the deal.
Were there is a will there is a way, hopefully you become a Mazda owner.
Good luck in the negotiations.
John

either that, or just negotiate it off the sales price rather than framing it as gaining the rebate you can't qualify for

If you don't qualify for the mfg rebate, you can't get it--unless the dealer can tell you they can work some magic. I'd just be firm with the dealer, and tell them that if they can't make up the $1000 difference, you are going elsewhere. Play them up: "Gee--isn't that new Highlander spiffy? And it gets MUCH better gas mileage than the CX-9. The Santa Fe is nice too. Much fresher than the 8 year old CX-9 design...."

Wow you guys are some tough customers. There is no way around getting a rebate you do not qualify for. The money is paid directly to the dealer from Mazda, and then passed on to you as a discount. If you do not qualify for it the money is not paid to the dealer by Mazda, and therefore that extra $1,000 never exists. It is not like the dealer has an extra $1,000 in markup and is 'not giving it to you' because you don't have a Mazda. Mazda corporate isn't giving them the money to pass on to you. The evidence that Mazda needs is a registration of a Mazda matching your address. If you want the discount so badly go buy a $200 Mazda off craigslist and register it to your house, bring that registration in and its worth $1,000.

Also if the original poster is basing his shopping/pricing off of newspaper ads the price is not going to get any better than that. It is usually a dealer's lowest price they would be willing to take for a car, and generally is only 'good' on one car listed in the ad. If you can convince one of the dealerships to offer you that same price on the car of your choosing you would be miles ahead of most people. I have even heard of dealers purposely damaging that one car (kicking in the door, keying the hood) specifically so you will buy something else when you get there and not take advantage/not qualify for the low advertised price.

Good luck in your search.

The dealer's best price is the newspaper price? I'm not sure I understand that one. Wouldn't EVERYONE then get the best price, since it's published? Seems to me quite the contrary, because newspaper ads are full of BS, with fine print like "Includes $5,000 cash or trade." And when the price is on a particular stock number, it's not the dealer's "best" price. It's the bait and switch price to get you in the showroom. Again--it's all BS. Call 'em on it or walk.

I also don't agree that the dealer doesn't have an extra $1,000 markup--they very well may. Just because you can go on Truecar and see the invoice, it doesn't mean that there aren't unpublished rebates, incentives, etc, that are for the dealer, and not the ultimate customer. If you don't push, you won't get these; and if there truly are no other discounts or incentives, the dealer will say that's the best they can do, and they will let you walk. I bought my CX-9 for way below invoice, without really having to push the dealer at all. Why? Just because there was a factory-consumer incentive? Sure, that's part of it. But I don't for a second believe that the dealer made $0 on my car.
