Is Mazda pulling a fast one on MSP owners?

good job ken for finding this info out.

now someone take side by side pics of the 3 versions, so we all can use to compare.

I have 2 differentials overnighted today and will be here monday

I force ordered a GS01-27-190A and ordered the new GSY1-27-190

what I know is, NO ONE had any complaints about the GSY1 till now.... from speaking with mazda today, I know that:
-25 dealerships have ordered the GSY1 differentials since October 1
-A bunch of them were sold to corksport also
I am having them contact mazda japan and other persons to get more specific details on the GSY1 differential

I also know that the GS01 and GSY1 are in cross-supersession right now... meaning if you try to order a GSY1 and your closest warehouse still has the GS01, they'll send you the GS01.. or if you try to order the GS01 but only the warehouse across the otherside of the country has them but your closest warehouse has GSY1s, you get the GSY1.... they're doing this to deplete stock

as of right now, all the GS01s in the US have been depleted... only 3 remain in canada that are unsold to dealerships or anyone...

as of 2 and a half hours ago, ken called me with his findings after he spoke to the shop that was installing the GSY1 differential and having his dealer's master tech look at another GSY1... they've determined that it is a torsen differential

so, I will take closeup pics and inspect the 2 different differentials monday night to confirm this and post about it

I'm glad to hear that Mazda didn't pull some b.s. on us with this. I would have lost my remaining faith in them if they had. I'm still glad I have a new spare welded diff just in case. Situations like this reinforce my desire to stockpile parts, as if my 323 GTX didn't already remind me once a month or so.

Ken was then told by Mazda that there is some (my words talking here)--> magical mechanical piece inside this new diff that manages to go against physics and only grabs both wheels under a certain amount of torque.

How is that even mechanically possible?! Either it's an LSD or it's not, right? My mechanic agreed with this sentiment.

The LSD will not begin to bias until a certain preload has been reached. Many times people will see one wheel moving and assume the diff is not functioning properly or is an open unit. The Quaifes I have built are set at a 15-17ftlb preload, which is a fairly hard torque to create by hand, spinning a wheel. You also have to remember that if one wheel has no torque input(in the air) the torque biased is 0(0*TBR=0). I can explain this a little more tomorrow if you'd like.

well its good to hear that its NOT an open diff, however i would be concerned as to whether this piece works better or worse than our current parts. This has me thinking maybe i should go to the trouble of pulling out my lsd and having it welded...

So stop rumors until, Ken or Edwin actually post that they have visually confirmed there is a difference.

even from a visual standpoint, i would like to know if there is a change made thats just not seen by pictures - i.e., different manufacturer, different materials.

in case it has not been mentioned already, the master tech has said there is a service update for the RX8 6 speeds to replace thier "super torque sensing" differentials with these as well. i believe the new MX-5 and the mazdaspeed miata use this new LSD as well. hooray for parts sharing.

Honda S2K shares the same diff as well. It's all made by the same Japanese Manufacturer.

I can entertain the thought of different materials used, but as far as the eye can see from the pictures, the construction remains the same...

I just want to make sure I read this right. RX-8/new mx-6/mazdaspeed miata/MSP uses the same new lsd?

Mazdaspeed Protege has used a Torsen Diff all along... At least since the 03.5

i thought the 03.5 one has the springs in it, and then the revised one is the torsen, or is the one with springs and without the same one?

From what I gather, they are all Torsen's
