iPhone 3G w/iOS4 -IS- compatible

Hi all,

If you are an Apple user, you no doubt know that iPhone iOS4 was released yesterday, with the actual iPhone 4 being released tomorrow/thursday.

I have a 2010 CX9 with the Navi touchscreen unit and the factory iPod integration cable (USB). I can confirm that on my iPhone 3G upgraded with the iOS4 software, it _IS_ compatible with the Navi/iPod configuration. However, there is a small quirk you'll find when you first hook the two together.

Normally, my onboard jukebox is a first-gen iPod Touch. Upon disconnecting the iPod Touch and connecting my iPhone 3G running iOS4, the Navi headunit at first did NOT see my playlists, songs, artists...anything. Whatever was playing on my iPhone at the time of connection continued to play and I could forward to the next song (I was playing inside a playlist at the time), but I couldn't see anything on the Navi screen regarding navigating the playlists I had on the device.

After about 5 mins or so, the headunit menu's started coming alive and letting me choose playlists, songs, artists, etc. as normal. Its no BETTER than before, but it is back to normal. I just had to let it 'learn' its way around the iPhone running the new iOS4.

I'm not sure of the reason for this...perhaps the factory Navi units have their own internal database and they have to download them from the iPhone?

At any rate, if you go this route, plug your phone in and don't panic...just give it a few minutes and you should be good to go.

I'm getting an iPhone 4 tomorrow and will report back to this thread regarding compatibility once it arrives.

Just thought I'd pass this along to those who were wondering.

I haven't tried bluetooth pairing yet....thats next.

Confirmed....iOS4 running on a 3G is compatible with CX9's bluetooth, both for telephone calls as well as stereo playback via AD2P. I have my wife's old 3G (still running older firmware) and the BT audio is GREATLY improved when sound is coming from iOS4 on my 3G. Its still not as good as via the dock connector/iPod integration, but it sounds far better than it did and better than I remember the Aux port sounding.

iPhone 4 arrives tomorrow. I'll update this thread then but I doubt there will be any changes.

...and to wrp this up for posterity, i can now confirm that the iPhone4 works fine with the 2010 CX 9. Both the iPod integration and A2DP Bluetooth streaming work perfectly!

Zoom3r,

Are you able to control your Iphone music through the touchscreen? We have a 2010 GT, when it is connected via bluetooth, it only let's you play and pause, and the ff and rew buttons are greyed out, so you must use the iphone itself.

I also thought the iphone was not compatible with the harness mazda sells...?

Thanks for the info.

Via BT streaming, I have only managed to get play and pause to work. That's it.

Via the Mazda USB harness, full dock connector functionality is enabled via the touchscreen. The iPhone 4 screen is white and just says "dock connected" or somesuch. Phone functions, app functions, etc remain enabled however. But all iPod functions are shunted to head unit.

i guess now my play is to find the right cord!

what was the total damage to get the ipod connector installed, etc?

edit: so the cord IS compatible with the iphone? damn you mazda dealership for not knowing anything!
