Hey everyone, I'm new to the forum so just wanted to say hi, seems like a lot of knowledgeable people are in here. I'm new to sports cars..I sold my frontier sc and got a msp...so i apologize in advance for any lame questions...i'm a newbie trying to learn..
thanks

welcome to our lil corner of the web unwrittenLaw

sir nuke should be around soon enough to give u the official welcome!

welcome!

ask any question you want. i do, and i consider myself an intermediate/advanced person with car knowledge. if i dont know the answer, surely someone else will.

hope you enjoy yourself here.

later.

Sounds good...well for starters, I was wondering what were some basic and inexpensive upgrades/mods I could do to increase performance,etc...I don't have any mechanical skills..so what are good types of places to buy parts and have them installed..

thanks

did u just go out and decide that u wanted a msp or did you have to wait for it?

there is nothing currently offered for the msp...however, injen will soon be comming out wit a cai and exhaust setup...until then...I would reccomend possibly a kn drop in filter...and if u want to spend the money..a good turbo back 3" exhaust

hey

basically that comes down to how much you're willing to spend. now being an aussie and our dollar being up the shoot at about 60us cents, I am for 1hp increase per $100aud spend on the engine (so 1hp increase per $60usd). that's a pretty good guide i reckon.

if the mod is going to net more then 1hp for $60usd go for it, if less, take a swerve.

now lets just say you want simple to do at home beginner mods, i'd go for an injen cold air intake, denzo iridium spark plugs (IK16 until you mod more, then IK20), and magnecor wires. that'll increase your smile enough for the time being.

unfortunately there isnt much bolt on stuff for our cars at the moment, so that's pretty much the limit without going mechanical like cams, turbo etc.

but i'd suggest look at handling. springs, sway bars etc....the reason i say this is because in oz (a lot of car people here are ricers) there was a video series (hot4's or something like that) where they tested japanese imported nissan skyline r33 gts's. (rwd 2.5L turbo). now. here's the point i'm getting at. the car with the most power was 2nd slowest out of 6 around a circuit. the fastest was the one with the 2nd least amount of power, but full on suspension mods.

do i have a point? i dunno. but i think i'm trying to say that power isnt everything.....it's part of a total package. if one part of the package is letting the team down, the whole team is let down.

I had been looking at getting one.. tired of driving a truck..then I test drove the msp and liked it so I got it..it's the only one in the county i think at the moment...got lucky i guess..

where could i get these parts, and where could i have them installed...like i said, i dont have any mechanical skills..but thats why i'm here to learn..

thanks

u could get a kn filter at any auto parts store...and this would be a mod that u could do yourself...regardless of mechanical skill

Hello and, welcome! The K&N cone filter you want is :

K&N RU-3580: Universal Rubber Filter $32.25

And, here is the maint. kit for one :

K&N 99-5000: Filter Care Service Kit Aerosol $8.68

Here's where I ordered mine from :

http://www.ajusa.com/cgi-bin/knfilters/details?part_num=RU-3580 (free shipping)

K&N doesn't yet make a cold air intake for our car, but this a nice way to start (inexpensive upgrade) as mentioned previously.

One of our fellow members, Britt (122 Vega) on the the forum was kind enough to show his installation. Here's his site.....

http://www.geocities.com/kiva75/
click on CAI #1 for photos of the K&N installed.

Another popular upgrade, and many are doing this, is adding a turbo timer / boost gauge like the Blitz tt-dc 2 turbo timer.
http://www.import-store.com/blitz_timers.htm

Britt also has photos on his site of his install of this particular unit.

These items, I have ordered, but I have already installed an Escort Passport 8500 Radar Receiver. This car has a funny way of getting passed the speed limit in a hurry!! Ha!!
(rofl) (rofl) (rofl) (rofl)

Oh; and if someone asks you if Greg likes his MAZDASPEED - tell them "You're damn right he does!!!" This car rocks!! And; I'm grinning hard at 2,000 miles.

Yes; it is a fairly simple replacement. You need to remove the air sensor that is mounted in the airbox top. Then; remove the airbox. I think it is only held in by (1) 10mm bolt. You will see it down to the lower right of the airbox. The K&N fits over the airtube that the airbox was attached to. You have to drill a hole in the side of the K&N to insert the air sensor. Mount the K&N and push the sensor into the hole, and you are finished.

This is my understanding anyway, as I have not received my K&N yet.

now if i wanted to move to bigger and better things like exhaust, boost gauge, manual boost, etc...what types of places could i go to get these things installed....i dont know enough or have the right supplies to do upgrades/mods right now...i might even need help with the air filter (like i said, i'm a newbie)...so any recommendations on types of shops to get this type of car work done?

thanks

Hello unwritenlaw and Welcome to our happy little corner of the net, and to our Club. There are TWO BIG fridge'S in the corner with anything you can think of in them...help yourself...of course only take what you can LEGALLY have. (stash)

make yourself at home on one of the big fluffy couches, kick your shoes off, put your feet up on one of the tables, yes we are allowed to do that, mom don't care....and take it easy.

oh...btw....every once in a while a food fight breaks out...so you may not want to wear nice clothes here.

Welcome!! (stash)

I ordered the K&N cone filter..so I might be asking more questions in here on how to install it, if u guys don't mind helping out a newbie..

Also, is this cone filter the same thing as cold air intake filter..or should I get one of those as well?

thanks
