Interior noises - Touring FWD

I wish there was a more centralized source for CX-5 TSBs, but I haven't found any sites yet :([/QUOTE]

I agree. There are lots of TSB's mentioned in various threads, and it would be helpful to have one location to go to, so we can print out any relevant TSB's. OK...who do we elect to make this happen?

I have the same noise. The noise stops when I hold my hand on the side of the console. The noise isn't that loud tho.

Is not super loud but annoying as hell, my daily commute is probably 20 mins and it drives me crazy every day. I don’t listen to music that often (mostly podcasts) so it gets even more annoying trying to listen to the radio with that rattle in the background. The problem is that it not just happens through a bad stretch of road, it happens driving through any type road.

how can we make tsb's a sticky thread?

I got a new plastic rattle noise coming from the center console. I found a thread here in the forum about how to remove the center console and the noise that I'm hearing is in the exact same area where the screwdriver is on the picture below (not my pic):

If I put my hand on that side of the center console the plastic rattle goes away and as soon as I remove it is back.

Would probably take that piece off and see if there's something that i can find that could be causing the problem but I wanted to know if somebody had seen this issue.

Thanks

Same problem here. Anyone managed to fix this? I case you have fixed it. How?

I find it rather odd, and slightly annoying that when the back seats are down, you can hear the clicking of the turn signals coming from the back.

Ha! I've never noticed that (and I drive with one or more of the seat backs down often). I would be willing to pay extra for surround sound turn signals.

Of course then the complaint would be it isn't loud enough, LOL!

You should buy a Saab :D

I'm taking a copy of the TSB to my dealer on Thursday. I have a rattle somewhere behind the instrument cluster, left dash speaker thats only getting worse. Let's see if they can find the source.

**Edit March 21** My dealer just called and they can't find the fault and so are unable to do the work. I call BS! He did offer that I could take them for a drive and tell them when I hear it. It's a rattle, how obvious does it need to be. Their mechanics must all be tone-deaf!

Frustrated!!!!!!!

Same problem here. I have taken apart the shifter trim piece just by lifting it up. I thought it was the shift linkage making the noise, but it is in fact the plastic panel to the side. I am going to mention it o the dealer when I go in for service.

I was so frustrated by my dealer on this. Yes they did try to hear the rattle, no they didn't hear it (two different mechanics) they offered to let me leave the vehicle overnight so they could drive first thing in the morning when it was cold and more likely to make the noise. I declined and said that I'd take it in another time. Yes they were reasonable, but at the same time the customer is always right. They could have said yes we hear it and do this service bulletin as I asked them. The problem with rattles is that everyone has a different perception and tolerance for it. So they were reasonable, but I still wasn't happy (a new car shouldn't rattle!)

So this morning, I took the cowl cover off myself and torqued down all three nuts. They weren't loose by any means as it took some force move them with my small socket wrench. They were probably torqued around 20-25 foot pounds which is probably factory spec. However, after I was done, they're now torqued to at least 45 (or more.) I got them as tight as I could without warping the metal or stripping anything! Hopefully that will help in the noise area. I did break one clip and one of the small white clips fell in a hole in the fender (never to be seen again LOL) but luckily enough, I could replace both with a simple zip tie. Dead easy job to do, don't waste running back and forth to the dealer if they give you the runaround! The hardest part (for me) was getting the passenger side wiper back on (since you have to lean across the hood a bit) but it was only a 5 minute issue. You might want to have zip ties handy or some spare clips just in case. Also, it would be very helpful to have one of those 90degree Phillips head screwdrivers. I ended up using a screwdriver bit held in a pair of vice grips to get two of the clips off since there is very little clearance for a regular screwdriver.

At the same time (and to doubly ensure) that there are no more rattles. I took the left A pillar plastic cover off and the left speaker grille and inserted some foam mounting tape in a few strategic areas where I thought they might come into contact with each other or the dash and rattle.

I just est drove the car, attempting to hit every speed bump, expansion joint, pavement patch and pothole that I could and so far so good! I'll have to drive for a few more days to see if this has fixed the problem. But my main complaint was on the road to work (coincidentally in front of my dealer as well) so by Monday I should know if the problem is fixed.

I'll attach pics of the cowl panel. The three black bolts just behind the shock/strut bolts are the ones that need to be tightened (if loose)

Hope it works for you. If I were to go to all the trouble to do this myself, I think I would have borrowed a torque wrench to be sure I had them right.

Anyone fixed the rattle in the center console to the right of the shifter?

Since I don’t have a garage I’ve been waiting for the temperature around here to get better to take the shifter cover off to see if there is something obvious that could be causing the rattle. I did notice that on the main TSB thread there is still no TSB for this issue.

Anybody experiment a sound when accelerating like a triiiiiiiiiiii. it's very annoying when the music it's at off...
Hey man!!! Yes I did!! I thought I was going crazy! Loli always hear it.music off and while accelerating... Kind of like a plane taking off... I suspected it to be air leak or something but I have so much rattles in my car... 4 different locations... I have given up on this car... I just want to trade in and get something else.... I don't care how much fun it is to drive... It is not worth it... New car feeling left me in exactly one.month of driving... And that sucks...

I have this weird loud "TICK!!" sound in the dashboard somewhere in the front passenger side. It was like you were hit by a stone on the windshield sound or a snapping plastic sound. This happens very seldom so I am not too sure how and where to check this. Please let me know if you have experienced this same issue.

That describes the sound I had better than the "rattle" heard by bcdad. Maybe I would call it a "tock" more than a "tick". I did the same repair he described and it went away (last year). I believe it also tightened up the handling a bit because the black brace is actually an OEM strut tower brace. The bolts were under-tightened from the factory because they were quite loose. I didn't put a torque wrench to them, I just snugged them up using the old wrist torque wrench.

I can't swear to it as it's been over a year, but I thought there were more than six fasteners that needed tightening, all the same size and all on that black strut brace. I recall one or two more per side that are hidden from view. I could be mis-remembering this but, if you're going to do this job, feel around a little so you don't miss any.

And, yes, it does involve the removal of the wipers and the little plastic clips holding the shroud in place are tedious to remove due to the number of them and that some are less accessible than others. Be methodical and patient and it's pretty straight forward.

Thanks for the reply Mike! :) I'll do this weekend to check on those six nuts on that strut brace and hopefully this will solve that annoying sound.

OK, let us know how it goes. I would be curious if yours feel under-torqued when you put a wrench to them.

The black brace gets bolted on after the vehicle is painted and I assume the under-torque condition results from the very short length of the bolt that is under torque and that the paint may be a little thicker in the area that is "squeezed" between the brace and chassis. Even if properly torque when installed the thickness of the paint could mess with the torque after the vehicle is driven hard and/or off-road.

This makes me think an after-market strut brace could be a good addition. Of course that could interfere with the frontal crash safety by not allowing the tops of the strut towers to collapse inwards towards each other in a frontal impact. I'm not about to sacrifice my CX-5 to test this theory (crazy)
