Hi everyone I'm brand new to the forums, and I just recently received an 02 Protege5 after crashing my 1st car in the snow (1996 neon). Im very lucky that I got this car and I cherish every part of it. I think I have become a strong Mazda enthusiast overnight and yea. Anyway, Ill prolly post a full intro thing later on the appropriate forum, but I just neede some help on buying an intake. Like most 17 yr olds, I dont have much money to spend, at all so hopefully some of you can relate. I was checking some post about intakes earlier and realized that its a good idea to check on ebay for one. So i did and i found this. What Im looking for is a maybe a little bit better response from the car but mostly a much better sound that the car deserves. If you can please check this intake out and tell me what you think. Should i buy it or not and i know im a newbie for asking but whats the difference between short ram and CAI? and if anyone is selling a CAI for cheap, please tell me. I forgot to say, my name is Ivan, and I live in Ohio. Thank you very much guys and girls.

The short ram intake pulls air from within the engine bay. The filter is placed at the front right of the engine bay (when you are looking at the engine bay). The cold air intake pulls air from under the car. The filter is placed in the hole located at the right of your engine bay at the front (again, when you're looking at the engine bay). The one you have found is advertised as a cold air intake but the picture is of a short ram intake.

I have had the ebay SRI with a K&N filter for 3 years, no problems. CAI or SRI, the topic has been covered so many times here. Bottom line, not a lot of horsepower gaines either way. If you are looking for better throttle response, look into some motor mounts, they really help. Click the link in my banner. Street Unit sells AWR, and will beat any advertised rate as well.

For power, without a turbo, you would be looking at an exhaust header, midpipe, and cat-back exhuast.

Take a look at my sticky at the Protege5 welcome section. I got information I provide to any newbie to the forum.

Good luck, and remember, the Search is your friend!

Ive got a ebay sri i would give you just pay shipping.. like $6 i think.. but yeah its that same one.. just about. ive got an injen CAI now much better.. though you gotta watch for big puddles in the road when you are driving..

I too am interested in getting a CAI soon, however while I was recently browsing through ebay....I saw this http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/Cold...039064117QQcategoryZ38634QQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem

A poor man's forced induction? lol, well I just want to hear some opinions from you guys about that interesting intake. Anyways, from what I hear- the intake will mainly effect the sound of your exhaust?

*Also I have installed my Megan Cat-back exhaust system about a month ago, and at morning or cold starts, 'something' seems to vibrate and it sounds like a scraping sound -even on idle and slow accelerating. Also something from the exhuast seems to scrape possibly the chassis (mainly when turning). I got some kartboy hangers, however I did not put them on yet. Any suggestions on what/may be causing that weird scrape sound.

Electric turbo. Kinda buyer beware, like those "intake chips".

As far as your odd sound, I would jack up the car and go under it, and check for something wearing odd. Best bet there.

I would be willing to bet it's the exhuast flange hitting the heat shield under the shift linkage. This is actually a common problem with the Megan system. I'm going to remove the heat shield altogether as soon as I get unlazy. A couple of guys on here have already done it and not had a problem.

Ah thank you very much for your input. Yeah that suggestion about the heat-shield sounds great. I'll check it out possibly tomorrow :D Oops my bad, I didn't catch the information 'RaiderMP5' posted. Thanks again :>

I know exactly where ur comin' from. i think that ur best bet is to go with a Toucan/ Ractive intake. It's a cheap and easy way to get a quality 9-12 horses. That's waht i have and i give it 2 thumbs up. :)

9-12 hp? Maybe 9-12 rp (raccoon power).

ok i feel like a noob here, but what are the differences between a short ram intake, and a cold air intake, besides those previously listed by ThebryGuy.
i.e what are the performance enhancements of one over the other, or is it just an auditory difference? thanks

sri sits right next to your engine and if gets hot enough ive heard of bad things happening to hoses,on the upside you dont have to worry about hydro-lock,plus theres less curves on it.cai however is away from any damage from heat, and brings in cold air from outside.but if you live somewhere where it rains alot or have alot of puddles mite not want to get it due to the fact it sits close to the ground.plus its hard to change the filter.

as far as performance gains.i doubt its alot.maybe 1-5hp but its mostly just the sound your payin for unless you start modding your engine.aftermarket parts to the engine together will give you alot of hp.just an intake wont give you much if any hp.if your lookin for a hp gain id suggest a joep mbc, real cheap and gain maybe 30hp+ i believe.

Explain something to me...how is it that you can gain 30hp+ or any kind of hp with boost controller? Where did you get that info? All that you can do with MBC or EBC is JUST control the boost.
