Intake and Exhaust for MP3

01 Mazda Protege MP3
Hey guys, I just purchased a MP3 @ 118,xxx last Saturday. I've got the code
P0420 Catalyst System Efficiency Below Threshold (Bank 1).

I was at the Mazda dealership and they quoted me $1300 to replace just the catalytic converter. For $1300 I can get a whole new aftermarket exhaust system. I've been reading around and haven't seen any specific brand that is used. I was thinking of the OBX Stainless Steel Race Header - Protege 2.0 Liter [H2020] for sure a header, but as for which exhaust system, which one do you guys prefer or recommend? I am planning on keeping her as an NA tune for now, and the Turbo will probably come later when I have a better budget.

Also what intake do you guys recommend? I read that the K&N Typhoon Cold Air Intake [696020TS] was the way to go, but you have to clean it every so 1000 miles? I was leaning more toward the Injen Cold Air Intake - 2.0 Liter Engine [rd6060p]
What do you guys prefer/recommend? I guess I also read that the cold air intakes don't really matter as they do the same thing?

Thanks.

If you can go with a high flow cat an SLS midpipe at Protege garage with the OBX. I have a Magnaflow catback and it sounds nice, not tinny. But if you plan on going turbo in the future you wont be able to use the OBX NA header .

As far as the SLS Midpipe goes, would this be the configuration I need for the MP3?
Code:
- Emissions Control High Flow Catalytic
- Protege/Protege5 Only
- Material Stainless Steel
- Version Protege/Protege5

Any thoughts on the intake? If not I'm going to go with the Injen Cold Air Intake~

I decided to go with the Injen Cold Air Intake since it had a limited lifetime warranty~ And I think I will get the OBX with the SLS Midpipe. But can anyone confirm that this configuration is what I need for the SLS midpipe?

The OBX and SLS is what I run on my P5, no cats. My Magnaflow catback is designed for my P5 not the Mp3 or sedan, but they make 1 for them too. The OBX/ SLS will work for you.you'll ned the CEL/MIL fix, cause you drop the 1st cat and 2nd if you go catless. See how to on this , don't do the 1 with the wire splicing, do the nonfouler. This dude just posted what you need.
FS: OBX header for N.A. 2.0

I'm pretty sure that I'm going to run with the cat. If I run with it do I still need the CEL/MIL fix?

Yah, there's 2 cats. when u put the OBX on it gets rid of the 1st one, and ther'es an o2 sensor bung on the header where u screw in the nonfoulers.what state are you in?

I'm in Minnesota~

Ah ok thanks for the advice~! I think I'll probably pick up the OBX from martispeed then. Anything else I should know?

As far as the intake goes, I see that where the Injen goes down into the bumper is where my current Coolant Reservoir is for my car, where would I mount that? Or does it not matter?

The K&N comes new with a coolant bottle relocating kit, the Injen should.

Why is the non-fouler option better? I just ordered an OBX header and am still up in the air about which mil elim to do. I was leaning towards the wire splice with the resistors cause its easier, but if the non-fouler provides an advantage of some kind I will do that for sure. The idea had crossed my mind that the readings from the non-fouler trick would be better rather than getting basically no reading as with the resistor trick.

P.S. Sorry for the thread jack!

I have the same K&N also and love it, I could have found it a little cheaper on ebay, but I wanted a valid warranty so I got it at here. K&N 69-6020TS, or you can try one of the vendors on the forum here, you can usually find a good deal that way as well. This was very easy to install and I love it. good luck (nana)(nana)
