IL might start to suck

well last winter I ended up sliding up onto a curb. I turned the wheels straight at the last second and probably saved my wheels and other suspension stuff. I lucked out and didn't bend the rim. I'd prefer to avoid that situation again in the future :)

is your sig picture with the drop? If so, I honestly can't tell the difference, no offense...

No it isn't. I have to update my sig. It dropped the car by .75" up front and about .85" in back.

i drove for 3 winters on my stock tires, never hit anything. in fact, the closest i came to hitting anything was last winter i almost slid into a curb at menards (i was probably centimeters from doom). i even traded in the p5 with the stock tires on with 36K and about 40% of the life left

I always thought people bought steelies to keep their summer wheels clean and pit free from salt corrosion. (dunno) I dont see the need for steelies unless you really wanted to get snow tires. I do just fine in the winters here, although they have been pretty mild since I've had the car.

That's because you live in the city where the roads are constantly plowed and the urban heat island is in effect.

I'm out in the country and the plows only get to the major roads usually. One day I was driving down a somewhat unlevel road and the car went everywhere. I mean everywhere - up, up, down, down, left, right, left, right. And that was with keeping the steering wheel straight.

I don't know how you can manage w/stock dunlops...

Yes, i know, i drive up to wisconsin for snowboarding on the stock dunlops, i know how they are. drove with them in a a couple inches of snow up in Wausau, WI. Sure, the car was squirrely, but i got by.

it does get squirrely at times but like bryan said, as long as you dont drive like an ass you will be fine.

and yes, the only point of getting steelies is to protect expensive aftermarket wheels from salt corrosion. in your case steve, steelies would a waste of money becasue you could mount snow tires on the stock wheels. (poke)

Steel wheels are going to kill your handling and gas milage. You car will feel sluggish and will feel like you are carring a ton of bricks in your trunk. IMO.

most steelies are lighter than aftermarket wheels

Yeah I just don't wanna be taking any chances this next winter. I'm still not sure what route I want to go w/the wheels. Remember I don't have the "stock" wheels - they are the polished version. Which I think cost an extra 5-600 as an option. So in a sense, they are a bit of an investment that I would prefer to keep nice... I'd also prefer if I got 17's that were lighter or same weight as stock (and not super duper expensive as well).

What I am doing, though, is keeping my eye out for "stock" wheels that I could mount snow tires on. Regular for winter, polished for summer...

Make sense?

polished or not, they are stock wheels. besides, you've already had them on for a winter or two, its a little late to decide to not use them for winter anymore, lol.

not all people buy steelies to "protect" wheels. some of us have hack-ass summer tires that do not work in snow. steelies are cheap as hell, and require no caring for, aside from a single rinse before storing them after winter.
