idle speed

When starting in the morning, my touring awd runs at 2k rpm, gradually dropping to 1.5k. Is this normal? when warmed up, it drops to around 7-8 rpm at idle.

I also noticed that the cranking of the engine at idle and acceleration is quite noisy. Do you guys have the same observation? I have only about 400 miles on it only. Will it get quieter over time?

the engine seems louder, because the air is cooler, causing it to combust much better. resulting in louder engine note. the engine is cold, its completly normal for it to do that.

my mazda 6 when i had a SRI sounded amazing in the early morning. nice and throaty.

This is for emissions purposes...the colder the car is, the longer it will maintain that high idle at startup. It's so hot in Texas right now that my car barely clears 1200 rpms at startup when I leave work, but it hits 1800 in the morning. During winter, it hits 2000 and stays there for a while before tapering off.

The purpose is to heat up the pre-cat and main cat as quickly as possible to minimize hydrocarbon emissions. Cold cats don't clean the exaust.

I like the description "throaty." That is exactly how I would describe my cx-7. I always thought quieter engines are better, coming from a Toyota. Oh, well. Perhaps throaty engines are what I should expect from a performance car.

Glad to hear that mine is also "normal".
