i am not that nuts, i rented a post hole digger that can be used by one person. the problem is its not for one person damn thing gets jammed then i have to turn it off use a pipe wrench to unscrew it. if i cant get my brother to help next week i am screwed. the wife is going to kill me for starting something and its not done yet. she say my projects take to long to do. wilson

my family rented a post hole digger and it still was hard as hell. i think regulation for a deck in lake county is four feet down and we kept hitting rock. no fun no matter how you try it.

clamshell hand diggers are terrible

yeah my dad's a big DIY guy and rented a digger as well. He and I were doing fine until it started RAINING. And of course my dad rented it for the day, so there was no way he was going to stop. We sat out there digging through mud for about 2 or 3 hours and then it got stuck in one of the holes. The motor wasn't strong enough to turn it, and with my dad and I pulling, it wouldn't budge. Luckily, my mother summoned her Asian power and pushed on the other end. With the three of us, we were able to get it out. But that day was absolute hell. It was the first and only day I've ever experienced cramps on my wrists from holding that damned thing.

Good luck!

42 inches? seems super deep. I can't remember how deep we made ours when I put up a fence with my dad years ago. I do remember the heat index was somewhere around 115-120, and we had to drink a pint of water every half hour or so to keep from passing out, and I never pissed once that day.

never seen such a mythic device...

They are s*** simple and if you need to move the fence, you just pull it out and fire it into the new place whole...

3'-6" in northern Illinois versus 0-5" in Austin Texas, hence why super deep. Anything less is against code and will eventually fail structurally and need to be replaced so you might as well do it right the first time. Digging below the frost line prevents the effect of ground heaving when undergroundwater freezes then expands. Pretty much frost sucks and makes you work super hard to put a damn fence up.
