I think I broke a rod...

wow....sorry to hear what has happened. Not that we want to make you re-live your pain, but what other details can you provide about how it happened. (other than running 9 PSI)

Was it a spool or FM or Custom Kit?

it was the FM / BEGI kit. The cause of the damage was detonation. Parts flew out from underneath the car just before the finish line, the check engine light came on, the oil light came on and I coasted into a grassy knoll. The detonation was due to way too much air versus way too little fuel, I think. Had i kept the boost under 8 or 9 psi, say at the 6 psi limit they told me to, everything would have run fine.

damn man i know how you feel
it happened to me ay 22 psi.
just ten times worse in the parts department!
thats why im going bullet proof and 15 psi

dont even ask!:(
thank god it wasnt the stock motor.
it was a trial motor we put together. ran on the dyno
once the strap was pulled for the second run, it blew thru the front bumper support. mind you that it went thru alot more before it got that far!
you have never seen anyone run for there lives like that because it sounded like a grenade had gone off
well the new motor will be feeling much better.
we will have video and picks hopefully by the end of the month for the newbie

bare w/ me... I am still learning about turbos...

Reading all this makes me wonder about getting a turbo after all.
It looks like the MP3 ECU issue played a major role with these problems (due to it's advanced timing).

(Not including the p5 running 9psi)

I am curious about something....

If I have a p5 and have it boosted with the FM kit @ 6psi and leave it there... should I expect any issues down the road?

Also... Would it be smarter to add forged pistons and rods when adding the turbo for added security?

Reason why I ask... I want a turbo but i want reliability as well. If reliability is questionable with 6psi on p5, I was wondering if the same setup with forged internals would "lock in" the reliablity part.

Thanks.

I think the key here...is that if you follow the FM recommended levels of PSI and Spools levels of PSI...you really dont have any concerns.

The problem...is all we ever talk about is either pushing those limits or about the aftermath when it has been pushed to far.

The FM and Spool Kit when followed are great. There are so many members that have both kits...that don't say anything good or bad.

That's what I was hoping.

I just have these concerns since the warranty will be gone.

Curious though... with forged internals, would you be able to add a few more psi (i.e. 8 or 9) without any worries?

Also, what is the total cost for forged rods and pistons?

Looking at previous posts, looks like they picked up the rods for ~ $750. What about the pistons?

Thanks again.

the car was a P5
it never had any problem with 6psi
hell it would still act happy at 7

the shop had run it at 9psi no problem
the night I picked it up from the shop after we had the GReddy put on I tried both the six and 9psi and it seemed not to complain at all at 9psi, although the car was a beast when the boost came up at 9psi

I guess today was just the straw that broke the camels back
and also we didnt have the fuel managment that we should have to be running 9psi
93 octane gas with 104 octane boost does not prevent detonation
now I wonder if that s*** even works

its my brothers car and right now i just want to cry
just thinking that I have a chunk of piston in a little bag mixed with a few rod and block parts makes me sick

I need a hug :(

beefing up the parts will help.....but the next concern is adding the right amount of fuel and tackling the control of the timing (which is still the black hole of tunning our cars right now)

Damn...Sorry to hear about this. :(

<--- To Detonation:mad:

Gotcha.
I was just seeing if it was worth it to be proactive or not.
Doesn't seem like it.
I will just stick with 6psi whenever I get the FM turbo.

It would have been easier to have gotten the WRX :)

Unfortunately now, if I would want to trade mine in for one, it would end up costing me close to 30k (in the long run). And I ain't gonna spend that kinda jack on a WRX.

That would be a good idea dficken! Don't want to see ya jacked up like me!

Damn.....POST 4,000! :wtf:

if you increase the stock injetors and run FM's "fuel enrichment" you should be fine.
the stock internals will handle 9 psi
10 max
but the problem is two fold. the tuning of the fuel regulater needs to be optimum and spark timing dealt with to be sure at high boost levels.
forged internals are the best way to go but whatever you do detonation will destroy any thing in the long run.

oopps it looks like i posted too late
sorry guys didnt see all the posts after his question!!:(

anyway on a finall note my pauter rods were 700 and change
my je pistons were 550

What's the compression on your JE pistons? I'm getting wiseco forged pistons for 490, and they're at 8.5:1, nice for a little extra boost. I also just got the pauter rods as well.

All this talk of forged internals YOU BASTARDS!!!! I need to get a FS-DE the pistons and rods are different in the FP-DE so I have to go full custom on EVERYTHIGN!!!!!!!!!!!! oh well time to start saving again.

i was going to go standard compression but jerry from JE pistons talked me out of it.
im getting 8.5 :1 like you.
nice deal on the wisecos by the way.
im a dealer for them to so i know you gat a good price. less than some others retail

Aww man,

What did he tell you? I got standard compression.
