I present to you, the Passion5

I'm towing the Passion5 to my parents garage tomorrow...and so it begins.

I wouldn't even consider working on my car without a garage. Its too cold... stay with the project though. The KL is an awesome powerplant for our cars. Mazda should have shipped them from the factory! Plus the KL loves boost :)

Yea, I've been meaning to upload some pictures that I have, but no internet at the house makes that a bit inconvenient. It made it over to my parents just fine and I've started working on it. Noteable mentions:
- Cleaned out the car and sorted all of my junk
- Fixed the rust in the engine bay from brake fluid spill
- Repositioned the radiator supports
- Pulled the wiring harness out (Couldn't believe the harness runs all the way to fuel pump without a disconnect...SNIP!)
- Continued to strip the engine bay of unnecessary junk to get ready for paint
- Installed front AWR end-links with new bushings
- Painted Rear calipers

Cleaning out the car and sorting everything took a couple days...I have a lot of stuff lol. But at least I have a much cleaner environment to get things done. I'm also helping my cousin get his newly acquired '85 300ZX prepped for the autox at the end of the month. This weekend I'm hoping to get the engine bay sanded and painted so we can get this motor in already! I also need to drop off my flywheel to be resurfaced and get the tranny painted to match :) Hopefully this weekend is an eventful one. Pics coming soon, I promise ;)

Edit:
I've hit a bit of a snag with the AC...not sure how I wanna go about getting it all plumbed up, the 626 radiator is very wide, almost touches both headlights, but does sit lower; but that makes running the AC lines through the core support a no-go. All of my screws broke off in the protege condenser and I think I'm just going to core it for the aluminum. What are you KL guys doing about AC if anything? This will be my family truckster, so it's a must. I think I may be able to route it over the core support by boxing in a channel or run it through the fender well like the power steering cooler. Discuss ;)

im not putting it back in. at least not know it is winter so i have time. i say wait you got time to figure it out

I'm deleting my A/C too so I can't help you. Justin (slotege plates with a whacky screen name) kept his though. He's running an MX-6 radiator.

I can't do without it in a dd, but I need the motor in before I can know where it all goes so I guess I do have time to get it figured out.

His MX6 rad looks identical to my 626 rad, the only difference is the AC condenser, unless I can find another P5 setup for cheap I'll have to make something else work. You can see Here (Courtesy of IukekiniProtege) that his setup looks to be just as wide as mine. Who knows I'm sure I'll figure something out.

Onto the progress!

Me tracking down the fuel pump harness, looking for an inline disconnect (no luck) so I cut it underneath the cupholders and will insert a 10 plug M/F connector to make removing the harness easier in the future:

Safety? We don't need no stinkin' safety!:

I had to pick up new seatbelts for the rear because she removed all of them! This was the only thing left, I guess she cut it because the bolt was on there pretty tight. Needless to say, I reinstalled all of the safety equipment after I sourced it all from Mazmart.

This Weekend's Agenda
1. Complete Brake System
a. paint/install the front/rear calipers
b. install Techna-Fit lines
c. install MZ6 ebrake cables
d. Fill the system with fluid

2. Sand/Prime/Paint Engine bay
3. Prime/paint transmission
4. Drop off flywheel to be resurfaced

just rechecked justins thread cuz i knew he mentioned how he did the ac and this is what i found. hope it helps you figure it out

Side note: One more step in having the swap entirely complete. I got A/C all installed last night. Was able to use all Protege Lines, Condenser, evaporator w/ pressure switch, and just had to use mx-6 a/c mount bracket and compressor.

works great, no leaks. I did replace all the O-rings while doing it. It shouldnt have had any issues since it is all the stock protege lines and condenser. Just some tweaking of the bends and locating the condenser higher is what was needed. The 1.8 and 2.5 compressors look identical with the in and out line locations almost in the exact same spots.

Judging by the way his lines are routed, I'm sure the condenser and majority of the lines in the 1.8 cars match the 2.0 cars. I'll see if I can find a MX-6 at the yard to compare radiator widths. As or right now, I would need to remove material in order to get the lines run. I'll take some more pics this weekend and do some brainstorming. Thanks!

Wow, this truly is a labor of love. :) So glad you're documenting all of this.

Cute pup too! :D

Glad my info is being passed around :). I am also working with Forzwin in regards of the way my radiator sits and where the lines run. I still cant believe how far this car has come. it will look good in yellow again.

Hey thanks! I've got to keep it all somewhere or I forget where I started :p Hazel jumped back there while I was working, laid around for about an hour before moving on, haha.

I'm glad that there are people on here that are actually willing to discuss the swap. Trying to get in touch with guys a year ago was a pipe dream.

I'm pretty confident that we can work through some pretty cool ideas. Back when I took this on, Justin was the only one doing the swap and there was hardly any documented info out there. Now there are 4-5+ KL swaps going on @ Mazdas247 alone, hopefully we can consolidate the information. Justin and I have already found a couple "oh so that's what you did? Here's what I did" type of things.

I'll get a better idea of my AC Setup this weekend. In talking with Justin, my 626 rad is the same as his MX6 rad (dimensionally) we have a similar tolorance between the headlights. I'm confident we'll make it work but I don't know if I'll be going back to the protege condensor and all. I'll keep you guys posted on what shakes, thanks for following the ride!

Sorry guys, I actually haven't seen the P5in a couple of weeks now. I've been busy prepping two cars for the autox we had last weekend. Here's a video of me not working on the p5, my fastest of the day, fyi its a bit loud :)

I'm road tripping this weekend to grab several "cosmetic" items for the P5 and hopefully saturday/sunday I can spend some time on it. I'll keep you posted.

Two cars?

The video is my other car, a 2003 Nissan 350Z and is the only car I use for autox/hpde. The protege is my only other car and will serve as my DD. It may find its way into an autox or an occasional track event, but for the most part, my Z is my go fast car :)

am i just reading this wrong then?

Whoops, no you are right. My cousin bought a 85 300ZX turbo and we've been putting a lot of work into that trying to get it ready for autox and track events this year. That was the 2nd car.

So while I didn't get any real work done today, I did take a road trip to meet forum member delturcious and pick up several parts from one of the few P5's ever parted out. I managed to get several key interior bits that were still missing from my car. Hopefully tomorrow I pick up where I tried to get started a week or two ago with the brakes and engine bay :(
