I present to you, the Passion5

yea i would say that paint flaked off due to bad prep, it was a terrrible color to begin with, so i guess the quality had to match lol

cars lookin good! keep up the good progress

Brian gets pretty nasty with his razor blade and makes quick work of the paint removal. I completely cleaned the drivers side door in about 20min. I've got an autox this sunday, but if nothing comes up saturday the rest of the car might be stripped...

Your gonna finish stripping it with out me :( Haha It is addicting. It's kinda hard to keep up and remember how far the car has come. (I know that sounds dumb considering its Pink.)

Has there been mention of the grudge match yet? hehhe

haha, I know right, remember when we went to look at it and we were like "how bad could it be for $500?" then the whole ride home was spent wondering what could posess someone to do all of that. I may not get to the paint chipping process this weekend, need to spend some time on the Z to get ready for sunday. You could always stop by during the week :D

Nothing on the grudge match, I was going to wait until it was running for all of that. Brian and I are going to team up and give you a real world demonstration of a KLZE vs. FS-T, I'm expecting to come out on the losing end of this one, as Brian's car is pretty quick, but if we have to do a 0-100-0 comparison I might come out on top haha.

that sounds like it will be an interesting race. just dont forget to tape it when it goes down

Haha, rest assured it will be caught on video. Brian's going to make me break the bank on a nice set of cams just to try and make it look like a race. It's going to look like an awful lot like PacMan chasing the blue ghost :D

Last night I had a couple packages waiting for me:

Package 1: From Mazmart
a. Rear seatbelt assemblies with every nut, bolt and bracket, including the latches for the seats
b. Mazdaspeed kick plates

Shalon with MazMart really went the distance to get me the complete seatbelt assemblies and was quick to answer any of my questions. Her prices were very fair and everything shipped the same day. I highly recommend these guys if you ever need anything. Thanks Shalon!

Package 2: From McMaster-Carr
a. Replacement O-Rings for the AWR endlinks.

I was actually pretty excited about finding the O-Rings ($8 for 25), after searching for a week at AWR, Lowes, Home Depot and various automotive stores, I was still empty handed. I called AWR and they were kind enough to give me the O-Ring# (which is #310 btw) so I started crawling the web. The O-Rings included with the endlinks are rubber and the years had not been kind to the used set I picked up. I managed to find a replacement O-Ring made of silicone which should give me superior resistance to the elements and an extended life expectency when compared to the original rubber pieces.

The seatbelts were a big to-do on my list and incredibly tough to get. Everyone I PM'd who was parting out a P5 just stopped responding. P5's are pretty tough to find around here, I really lucked out with mazmart. I splurged on the kick plates, maybe if I stopped doing that the car would get on the road already...

nice scores!

any work on the engine? i know you got the headers, but when will she move under her own power?

Tough to say. I need to paint another valve cover (cracked and rung a bolt off in the one in the pictures) and a few other bits to make it pretty. It should go in soon after that, but the problem isn't just the motor, the whole car needs a once over, lol. I'm working on the suspension and interior while it's at my house, but I really need to sell off some of these parts to free up some space inside the car; the wife won't let me bring anything else in the house :D

The unknown part is the wiring, I'm going to make this work with one ECU, I haven't read anything that makes it impossible to use one ECU, it just seems to be the easy way out. No offense to anyone else that has done it that way, but I haven't found anywhere that states it cannot be wired with one ECU because of [insert reason here]. Looking over the schematics for both cars, I see there are similar wires traveling different paths, but I should be able to get this working. It may be more wiring than most want to tackle, but compared to my previous swaps I haven't ruled this one out.

I'd like to say that it could be done by the end of November, but then I'm just tossing out an arbitrary date. The motor will go in once the suspension and all is sorted. If I can get my rusty axle out of the hub, install my inner/outer tie-rods and locate a spring compressor this weekend I'll have all of the suspension on the car. I still need to paint the engine bay, but once the suspension is on it can make the trip to my parents house to live in the garage. Which equals motor install and paint time! Also I'm contemplating moving from roller to rattle can, that one spot on my fender has really impressed me as far as durability goes. Not sure how many cans it would take (or cost) but I'm definately on the fence now.

[The End] :D

I have to look at the number when I get home, but it's out of a 1994 626 autotragic. Plan is to use that harness (sans all of the auto junk) and merge the protege's chassis harness with the 626 ECU and engine harness.

Awesome build man! I've always had a soft spot for the P5s. Can't wait to see it finished.

Subbed. Haven't had a chance to read everything yet... wish I had the know-how and space to do this kind of stuff....

Since I last posted, I managed to score a set of Mazda6 ebrake cables from Shalon at Mazmart for $35 shipped. These will complete the mazda6 brake upgrade and bring the grand total for everything to $526.95. That might seem a bit steep, but considering it was essentially an entirely new brake system, I think it's a great deal. That price includes the following:
2008 Mazda6 V6 Calipers - Front
2008 Mazda6 V6 Calipers - Rear
2008 Mazda6 V6 Emergency Brake Cables
2008 Mazda6 V6 Rotors - Front
2008 Mazda6 V6 Rotors - Rear
Hawk HPS pads Front/Rear
TechnaFit Stainless Braided Brake Lines (2002 Protege)

In other news, I've had a stubborn axle that would not budge from the passenger-side hub and was really holding me up on reinstalling my suspension; looks to have been rusted shut. For the past week I've been soaking it in PB Blaster first thing in the morning, and when I get home give it a couple whacks with the hammer. It finally budged! lol, after about 3 days of this process, the axle finally started moving, I just have to grind down some of the mushroom I created and punch it through. I also dropped another order to RockAuto for a replacement set of wheel bearings and axle/thermostat seals. The wheel bearings weren't bad, but with all of the other new parts, it didn't make much sense to retain the old wheel bearings. It's a little late now for pics, but I'll try to get some current progress shots up over the weekend. Hopefully RockAuto can get me the wheel bearings before the end of the week and I can get them pressed in this weekend.

One ECU is definitely possible because the ABS system has its own brain. I'm running my swap on megasquirt and have functional gauges, ABS, fans, ect. Just spend a lot of time tracing wiring and be sure that each and every joint / splice is done well.

To get the axle off try using a large pulley puller/remover, I saw that trick on one of the howtos and it apparently works very well.
