I present to you, the Passion5

Lol, I had to make due, not sure what happened to the original jack handle, lol. I have a wedding this weekend so I doubt I'll get to put in much time on it. My parents have a garage, so that's where the engine lives and pretty soon (1-2wks) I'll make plans to tow the car over there to get it finished up. Now that I have just about all the parts, there isn't much holding me back from getting it done.

There is an autox on the 24th, I'd like to have it running for that, but I'm thinking that may be cutting it close. That's a great way to break it in, no? Normally I drive my Z, but she's low on tread in the rear :(

your going to love those Mazda6 brakes. I've had mine on the car now since April with EBC pads and rotors, and notice a huge difference in braking in the car... great addition to your car..

Great! That's what I'm hoping, this is a lot of brake for a fairly light car and it was a fairly cheap upgrade. What year did yours come from, 03-05 or 06-09?

I got mine off of the same 07 Speed6 that i took the rims off of. i have the front calipers installed with braided lines and the rear will be done this winter. Just have to order the e-brake cable... Size of rotors are Front: 12.58 in Rear: 12.35 in

that is huge for such a small car!

i remember when i first got my p5, the brakes had just been redone and it would stop super hard with minimal effort. so much, that i had to be careful with the pedal. i was worried about winter driving like that. i cannot imagine what kinda fun in the winter those would be! hope you have abs. (i dont)

nice build man... been keeping track since the start and am amazed at the difference! keep on chugging and that will be a sweet ride in no time!

Do the 6 brakes just bolt up to the P5, or did you have to do something special for mounting/brackets?

Ah! So you actually have the Mazdaspeed6 dual-piston setup? I'm using the brakes off of a 2008 standard mazda6 v6, so they are single piston and a touch smaller (F: 11.75" R: 11.02"). My car was in need of new pads/rotors/lines and a new front caliper anyway, so the upgrade made sense, though the speed6 equipment would have set me back another $300, not to mention I didn't need all of that for the DD.

We don't get much snow down this way and when we do I try to keep good tires on the car and use my head. My car does not have abs either, but neither have the majority of my past vehicles, it really doesn't bother me.

If you get the calipers and brackets from the mazda6, it all bolts up-even your stock brake lines; with the exception of the emergency brake cable (too short). The 06-09 setup is larger than the 03-05's but they all fit, just keep in mind which ones you get when ordering pads and the like. None of the junkyards would sell me a mazda6 ebrake cable and it's almost $60 new if you can find it. I'm going to try a 626 cable and see if I can get that to work. This is a very sweet upgrade for the cash, I did rotors/pads/calipers and SS lines for right at $500.

Thanks to everyone for following along, things should get interesting soon...

My calipers are only a single piston but it is a big piston, I got all my Speed6 brakes and rims off of the car at the shop before it was junked... Mine is also a DD but i prefer to have the best braking possible, paired with good tires not to mention i have 18s so the added brake size looks good.. just wish i could fit 16s so i could use my factory wheels to store the car this winter...

I must have been confused then; I'm shopping for brake upgrades for my Z too, so maybe I just crossed platforms? :) All in I'm sure its a great track setup, not that the standard MZ6 V6 setup isn't, I just didn't need all of that going back/forth to work. I do like that I can still run the 16's, and it fills them up very nicely, makes me not want to run the 17's.

My Techna-Fit brake and clutch lines showed up yesterday so I will be able to finish the brake swap this weekend (hopefully). I have a wedding to attend Saturday and with all the rain I'm not sure when I'll get to work on the car. I will make a trip to my parents tonight to work on the engine, lots of goodies for that. In the next week or so I intend to move the car to my parents place as they have a better work environment (read: garage) that will allow me to work at night and in adverse weather. I'll get more pictures up tonight/tomorrow.

So I haven't updated this in a while, been working on it here in there. I tried putting on my new suspension only to find that the previous owner tossed all of the spring mounts in order to achieve that Hellaslammed snowplow stance. I had to place an order through Online Mazda Parts for all new top hats, spring mounts, bearings and upper and lower rubber seats; kind of tedious, but I wanted to do it right. I did manage to mount my MSP sway bars and Energy Suspension bushings using the brackets that came with the bushings, no need for the MSP brackets. I also installed new LCA's on both sides and need to make time for the inner/outer tie rod ends before reassembling the suspension.

As far as the engine goes, I test fitted the headers, all but one bolt hole lined up, but it looks as if I can bore out the hole and make it work. Brian and I installed a new front main seal and did the timing belt and water pump. I installed the new valve cover gaskets, but in doing so, cracked a valve cover and broke a bolt for the timing cover. I had a pretty exciting day at the junkyard as I came across a new VC, coolant pipe and a full power steering setup out of a MX6 (needed the reservoir and return hose).

I asked Brian to give me a hand with the sway bars and he ended up chipping away at the pink paint, literally. It turns out that I was going about this the wrong way thinking I would just sand it all off; turns out that all I need was a razor blade to get it going. Brian started with the mirrors and it eventually spread to the rear quarter panel and the roof. We were pulling off huge chunks of paint at a time as if we were removing a vinyl decal, kinda scary and I'm glad that I didn't try to paint over it. I also threw some TLC at that one fender I painted yellow (without any prep) by washing it with windex and throwing on a coat of NuFinish wax, lol. Much to my surprise it has endured the weather pretty well, I'm confident that if done right and maintained that it could make for a decent 10-20 footer. You'll see in the pictures below that it has a similar sheen as the rest of the paint.

What's next?
...a rough idea
a. Finish Suspension
b. Strip the rest of the pink
c. Tow to parents house to get ready for motor install.
d. Paint the engine bay and Install the motor
e. replace the interior
f. lots of wiring...

lookin good. what headers did you go with? and that paint is scary y did it come off so easily? just a crappy job?

I went with the generic ebay headers, for $130 shipped, I expected something to not fit. Not sure why the paint would pull off that way, poor prep I suppose but maybe one of our paint professionals can chime in. It was pulling most of the primer off with it in spots, which was interesting. I did find out that it was originally painted a much deeper magenta and then re-primed and repainted. Oh well, we'll be getting rid of all of that junk soon.

y not get pacesetters or hotshots i saw a set of hotshot headers for sale on mx6, probetalk, or performanceprobe.com cant remember which
n i just realised what u did to the p5 in your sig. thats funny

wow.

that was some whacky paint. they must have used 10 gallons of it to get that thick.

and i like your sig pic as well.

Haha, I was wondering if anyone was going to pick up on the signature picture; I guess I need to update it again. I am pretty stoked about the paint though, that will save me a ton of time and hassle having to sand through it all.

I went with the ebay headers because:
a. Didn't have the rest of the factory V6 exhaust
b. Much cheaper than pacesetter or Hotshot
c. Most folks throw down similar #'s to the aforementioned.
d. I'm not trying to squeeze every last horsepower out of the engine.

In reality, I just wanted something that would flow a little better than stock and didn't want to toss a rusty set of anti-flow stock manifolds back on it. Looking back at my price sheet, they set me back a whopping $112 shipped, much less than anyone was going to let their pacesetters or hotshots go for.
