I have to be honest, this thread seems to be made of fail. Perhaps the explorer has been converted to run on solar power and the lift kit will get it closer to the sun thus increasing the charge in the solar panels?

I fail to see the logic here.

Why an explorer if you don't mind my asking?

Hey guys I'm sure the Mazdaspeed3 totally has the same monthly costs in insurance and payments as a 10 year old SUV!

Sure he spends an extra 50 - 100 in gas, but I bet he's paying much, much less in the long run.

Well now that he's not making payments on a brand new car, he could have gone with something more practical to go along with the somewhat practical decision of getting rid of his brand new car.
And modding the gas guzzler on top of that...

We don't know his entire situation so let's not judge. He came here to get some support from his forum friends. Maybe he screwed up badly, but don't kick the guy when he's down.

I'm starting to wonder if people on here can do math. The 1998 Ford Explorer got about 33% worse fuel economy than we do according to the EPA. So yes his cost of gas goes up. But not having to insure a new vehicle and not having to make $500 a month payments more than makes up for the increased cost of gas. He may have even got a good deal on someone offloading the Explorer to try and get out of the gas payments.

Plus, maybe his "personal issues" need him to have something that can haul, say, tools. Or handle rough terrain. Or pull a trailer.

You guys is daft some days.

Now now... Dont throw up a thread looking for support without all the facts. I am very empathetic to his loss and now having to drive the Explorer but would not go to see a counselor without telling him the whole problem. However and to your point, he is now driving a 2k explorer (out of pocket or higher interest rate loan) and 33% higher fuel costs along with a much more likely and costly maintenance as nothing is warranted and those things brake down a lot and have serious trans/transfer case issues late in life aside from the fact that who the hell is making a $500 a month Speed3 payment?

How's it two steps back to (hypothetically) go from owing $20,000 on a new car to owing maybe $5,000 on a used car? Even if you roll in gas, insurance and expected maintenance, the cost of ownership over 2 or 3 years should be much, much lower.

Assuming there are no major repairs that end up not worth fixing but full replacement of vehicle, or worse yet and accident carrying no fault insurance resulting in the same ultimate replacement of the vehicle. I think the point is when you hear someone is downsizing their life due to personal issues, one would assume in this day and age it is bad. Financial/social/employment issues that buying a gas guzzler that will need serious work (even when new) is not the solution. Honestly, I hope I stand completely corrected and the Explorer is what he needed and soon enough he will have himself sitting behind the wheel of yet another speed (whatever model it may be) in the very near future! Rock on man, we get nothing in life without sacrafice.
