I have found the noise

Alright She is in. Brought it in at 730 am. I was hoping for it to be done already, but I guesss not. Lets hope for tommorw.

WHOOT WHOOT, got the car back today. The reason why the cat had a whole in it was because I drove around when it misfired. What happened was when the unburned fuel left the motor it happened to ignite in the precat therefor it busted up a hole in it. When I got there, their head mananger told me that he had to fight for me to get mazda to pay for it. Mazda said that they dont want to pay for it because I had no previous service records but the dealership pulled through. I think he fought soo hard because he knows that im only 17 and it would take me a long time to pay the $500 dedutible that mazda wanted me to pay. So yeh the dealership arent always wanting to rip you off. I would also like to say thanks to everyone on the forum for giving me suggestions on what too do. Im so happy and now my MP5 drives beautifully. I love it.

I'm glad you got it fixed and he took care of it, but I think the guy's full of crap. That'd be a CRAZY misfire to punch a hole like that in the cat. I don't believe that for a minute.

Maybe they meant backfire? I always though misfire meant that a cylinder had not ignited, whereas a backfire is the resulting unburned gas exploding in the exhaust system.

So chopperman, was the car misfiring or backfiring?

Don't know about you folks, but I have about a decade of Mazda ownership (2 years with the P5, 8 with the 323) and I've never seen a backfire. Come to think of it, no car I've ever owned has backfired, going all the way back to a decade old '65 Corvair coupe. My point being that a backfire is not something one normally encounters in a well maintained car.

If it wasn't modded then it's not your fault. If he doesn't have service records thru mazda because he serviced his own car with oem parts & has receipts, it's still not his fault. The emissions warranty prevailed. I think the dealer overhyped the fight. They just couldn't come up with a clear cut good enough reason to deny the emissions warranty. They don't care how long it would take for the deductible to be paid because after long enough they put a mechanics lean on it & get basically a free used car to sell for pure profit. Dealer schmealer.............

I did drive it when it would misfire, when I head the noise for the first time I was on the highway and the motor started misfiring. I wasnt able to stop so I kept driving while it was still misfiring so its a good chance thats what had happened.
