I always have trouble seeing at night in the back of the trunk. So I decided to mount a fluorescent light I found at Big Lots for $9. What I like about it, that it has an on/off switch at the 12v plug.

What? No duct tape? No zipties?

Put some effort into it for goodness sake!

Yeah - seriously, the lighting at the rear hatch is weak. ANYTHING is a vast improvement......I'm thinking about stopping by BigLots! tonight after seeing this!

That's funny. I know the lighting sucks there when it's dark. I just came from Walmart and I was looking at those newly popular LED light strips that come in a variety of colors. I just had a vision: hard wire a 12 inch strip of white LEDs to the incandescent CKT that is at the right of the trunk that has a switch, and stick it with double-sided tape to the top so it shines down on everything and then run the cables behind the panels. It's so thin and out of the way.

Sounds like a nice Sunday project. Only problem is, will it take the fuse out?? Have to calculate the resistive value I would need.

Well the light comes with a fuse assembly which I hid in the little cubby and the closed it because the wire is really thin. The light sits the way it is, being held by little metal holders that are attached with double sided tape. So it won't move anywhere it just sits there in that position. I could have tucked in the wires but it got too cold. And I love that switch that lights up blue as you can see.

i should probably buy a bunch of these lights and run the wiring under the carpet like my satellite antenna and have a light show, but I don't want to blow the electrical. LOL.

LOL Hell! Thats awesome! Great find man, i gotta go get me at least one of those. My brilliant idea is to recess a nice bright light into the floor right where the lift out portion meets the rear threshold. I would try to wire it from the CLA in the back, or maybe to the weak sauce light on the opposite side so i could switch it there. There is a thread on this forum from several years ago where someone did wire in a bunch of LED light strings, he even included install pics and instructions...

Having just taken a weekend trip in the MZ5 with mega luggage I can say the lighting in back is pretty poor. I though of adding another light to the driver's side and then stumbled upon this Mazda UK accessory "Boot Light":

The twin light on the driver's side will help, but it looks like these things are on the ceiling or hatch shooting down, which would solve the problem of luggage up against the light. I also looked at the second row dome light. Wouldn't be hard to cut a hole in the rear plastic ceiling tip piece and add one in. Would be nice for anyone in the 3rd row as well.

The led strip do work with our cars it's a simple install you just need to add more wire
I have a 30'' in strip wired to the trunk light

You are tapping off the trunk light circuit in parallel right? The 30" strip doesn't blow the fuse?

Why do they call it a boot light? I followed the link. Does "boot" mean something else in British English? LoL

This was fun when I was helping my dad go through Land Rover repair manuals!

Boot = Trunk
Bonnet = Front Hood
Spanner = Wrench
Earth = Ground (electrical)
Wing = Fender
Saloon = Sedan (as opposed to coupe)

My personal favorite :
Lucas = crappy electrical system.
