OMG.....it was a close one!! My wife had gone shopping...and pulled up and called to me to help bring in the groceries....as I got to the garage I could see that there was a nasty storm blowing in....I hadn't noticed it out the window of the computer room as it was coming from the other direction.....so I headed back in to shut the computer down and before I could get in the door FLASH!!!!! BOOOOOOOM!!!!!! FLASH!!!!!!BOOOOOM!!! when I got to the computer room there was nothing but a black screen!!! OMG ITS FRIED!!!!!! was the only thing I could thing....the TV was still on....so we had power.....CRAP!!!!! this is all I needed I thought.....well I just was sooooooooooo pissed off.....I just was not ready to have to replace a fried computer....the money is just not there.......I DO have a surge suppressor.....and its a good one.....but they can only do so much. The monitor was on....so I figured that the surge suppressor didn't work.....I pressed the reset button on the computer as the power light was still on in the front...and nothing....I was pissed some more.....I turned it completely off. After about thirty minutes I went in and turned the power off on the surge suppressor and then back on...when I did my computer started to boot up automatically.....and IT STARTED UP!!!!!

omg I was soooooooooooooooooooo frickin relieved!!!!! make me want to kiss my surge suppressor!!! :{D

computer power supplies are disgned to either act as a surge protector or short right out before the power surge gets to the motherboard

Nuke, in your surge protector's honor (canadians read: honour), go out and buy a new surge Monday. Get one that carries a replacement insurance policy like Tripp-Lite Or APC (no, not THAT APC). You popped the thermal protection on the power supply. But once a surge protector has taken a hit like that, it's protection is shot.

Exactly. And if you turn off your switch on the PSU for a few mins and turn it back on, it will likely work.

Bob, I didn't skimp when I baught the surge suppressor I have.....it carries a $15,000 equipment replacement warrantee.

and I have heard that any surge suppressor is only turely good for one shot and you are better off replacing it....so the next trip to the electornics store I will be getting a new one.

I didn't realize when I first turned the suppressor off that it would take a bit before it would truely reset....however....it did its job....and I was soooooooooooooooo proud it did.

SOMETHING else for anyone else that reads this thread.....ALWAYS get a surge suppressor that also protects the phone line, that is if you are still on dial up like I am....its a big mistake that a lot of people make and over look.

do they make a supressor to protect cable modems too, or is it not needed?

if there is a cable that plugs into your computer at all and that cable in any way goes outside your house....and the cable does...you need protection.....

I don't know if they make something like that for cable or not.....never looked into it.

I've got a "Monster" surge protector, not for my computer though, the TV, but it does have a spot for the cable to come in then go out protected, I'd assume it would work the same way for computers
Its a nice piece- got it for the stereo and tV
bout 60 bucks or so and it has a few grand garauntee

derrick1623,
Yes they do, but like they said, it doesn't say specifically for a cable modem. Just put the input from the wall into the unit, then from the unit to the cable modem. I have this done on a APC unit that I use at home. Mine also has a phone line jack which I use for my work laptop. (Can't VPN though my cm service provider)
Best protection piece I have ever bought. I've blown 2 TVs (under warranty) in the past, but never lost a computer. Now everything in the house is on APC units.
Maybe some day when I get enough cash I'll put a whole house unit on to keep the crap from coming in at all.
