I have this card:
GAINWARD/CARDEXPERT GeForce 3 Ti200 64MB (NVIDIA GeForce3 Ti 200 GPU), Power Pack Golden Sample, ( 4ns. 64MB DDR. ). $133.00 at NewEgg.com
I looked into others before deciding on this and am glad I did. Now the GeForce 4200 is out but I have not done any research on the performance differences between my card and it. $193 gets you into the 4200 with 128 mb RAM.
The GeForce3 Ti200 can be overclocked to perform allmoast as good as the Ti500. It is a simple process to overclock as the software to overclock it is sent with the card. I looked into different cards and this seemed to be the best value at the time. I can recommend NewEgg highly. Their prices are in line with the cheapest listed in pricewatch.com, their shipping is reasonable and they are very good with returns. I had to send a motherboard back (don't buy a soyo) and got a GigaByte instead and the transaction went very smooth and fast. Check Tomshardware.com for reviews of cards.
Hope this helps.

You could play online in the past (with Blizzard games) w/o being legit.
Antoine said:Thanks for the specs...looks like the recommended specs are low...although I have 32mb card...its a year old or so...what are the 128mb cards priced at now? What are your opinions on the best "bang for the buck" 64mb card?
Thanks...

Up until Starcraft's release I believe, right (or maybe Diablo's release?)? They started to use individual cd keys when you play on Battle.net. No two same cd keys worked on their servers. So, two players can play with the same cd key (full online game mode) only if it is a network not connected to BNET.
pr5owner said:my system is garbage, can't even play Mechcommander 2 properly
so if you want the game to run smooth you need at least double my system
i have a...
Abit KT7 mother board
Duron 700@900MHz
512Mb of Micron Ram all running at cas2 (even though i have some cas 3 in their too lol)
GF2MX Video card with Tv-out 32MB
10Gig HDD @ 5400RPM
46.5Gig HDD @ 7200RPM (games/mp3 drive)
i recommend if you want okay graphix on and all the goodies you need
Athlon 1.8GHz
768MB Ram
GF4 128Mb
at least an HD that spins at 7200+ RPM

The best priced cards for the NVIDIA brand are the GeForce3 cards, but I have heard they are not worth the purchase because the performance is not that different from near top-of-the-line GeForce2 cards. A couple people I know (who likes to buy the "latest & greatest" PC hardwares skipped GeForce3 so they could wait for the GeForce4 before ditching their GeForce2 from their main system.
It's up to you though, because if you play heavy duty games I believe a "top-of-line" GeForce2 card is sufficient. Morrowind is a good example of a hefty system requirement in order to play. One of the game's graphics designer once mentioned in an open chat gathering that he thinks the proper minimum video card for Morrowind would be a GeForce3 card (and not the MX version)... if you wanted to see the full special effects from the game. Though the box on Morrowind "RECOMMENDS" a GeForce2 GTS card... which is what you want, because Morrowind sucks if you play using their minimum requirement with just a 32mb video card. I've done that before so I know... GeForce2 MX and GeForce3 MX does not equal to high quality gaming experience  . Yeah, try not to go the MX route... they are not as good if you want to play 3-D games.

It all depends on the perspective of the buyer. If you already HAD a very high end Geforce 2, then a Geforce 3 might not be worth upgrading to. HOWEVER, if you had a geforce 2mx or less, It would definitley be worth going to a G3. And I'm sorry...you're wrong...the faster geforce 3's beat the faster geforce 2's by a nice margin...mostly at high res. Plus the geforce 3's OC like a champ.
First of all, this "Geforce3MX" you speak of does not exsist. Geforce 3 only comes in 3 flavors...Ti200, original, and ti500. Althouth there IS a geforce 4mx...which is just a juiced up Geforce 2. Stay the hell away from those...for the money, you'd be better off with a Geforce 3 instead of a G4 420, 440, or 460.
But anyway, he was going for a "best bang for the buck" upgrade. If you must upgrade, and you have a g2mx or less, a Geforce 3 ORIGINIAL or a ti200 should be $100 or less, and they are great cards...they'll play any game out there with nice settings. BTW, Anisotropic filtering and 2XFSAA are your friends. Stay away from Quincunx...it's hideous. [/B]

Oh yeah, I meant Geforce4 MX, not GeForce3 MX... my bad.Prices are surprising to me for the Geforce 3, but I'm not in the loop with prices anymore. I still go with GeForce2 GTS since I have seen some well under $70... although GeForce3 just has a little more features (with quincunx, etc) and I agree that I'd take one if well under $100 for 64mb....
Okay, Quincunx maybe burs a bit too much for my taste too, although it's purpose is to reduce aliasing .. but I don't really see that much of a difference between Quincunx vs 2XFSAA, IMO. So both are still my friends.
Anyways, anisotropic filtering vs trilinear filtering, 2XFSAA, 3XFSAA, 4XFSAA ... aaahh... 8XFSAA!!! 16tab vs 64tab... not very different in the end.... You'd have to play at VERY high resolution that no one really wants to sacrifice their system performance for (i.e. only notice subtle difference while playing Quake, Everquest, Morrowind, etc... get my drift? first person 3d character environment).....but, hey they are ALL good stuff and I love how they have improved the overall game play VISUALLY!!!

LOL, you think online multiplayer serial number checking is mathematic? That you can "randomly" generate a serial number that "looks" good to the game, and will be able to play online?
Maybe for Starcraft, and maybe for other REALLY POORLY concieved games, but AFAIK, game manufacturers have a record of every serial number ever issued for a given game. So you can keygen if you like, and it will let you to install the game, but chances are the keygenned serial was never issued, and does not exist in their authentication servers database. Game over, go buy the game! Every respectable game with online multiplayer is based on that princple (ra2, q3a, war2 bne, hl, ...), and I respect the concept of limiting the execution of the online game to one computer at a time.
But...an approach like winxp retail's windows product activation (WPA) is really just an annoyance. I purchase my windows software retail, then download the corporate ISO off the 'net because I install my win2k every couple of months average. That or I download the WPA crack. I think it's a joke that I find myself compelled to crack a perfectly legitimate boxed copy!
sundevilMP5 said:yeah...i bought my geforce3 when they first came out...my card still beats a lot of cards out there...the 4s are much better but i didn't think i would upgrade for a while...i would say best is either the geforce4 4400 or 4200 right now...i don't know much about any other companies out there...i've always been a nvdia fan...
This I did not know, but find surprising.Kooldino said:For example, it is fairly easy to get online and play Q3 with a keygen'd key.
"Banning" you could say is kind of automatic. the Q3A keyserver "locks" a key to an IP address for a short period of time. This means that if your DSL loses it IP and acquires a new one, you will fail to authenticate for approx 15 min. (This used to happen to me). And if you are trying to use the same key from multiple IPs, only the connected user will work. I suppose they have traps in the keyserver that lock a serial being requested by multiple IP addresses within a certain period of time.Kooldino said:Also, I think that if ID (for example) sees 10 copies of quake online at a time all using the same key, they will ban that key. HL does similar things.

GEez, you must have paid some boku bucks for your G3. Ouch. I usually stray from very high end vid cards. I don't ever spend more than $200...it's usually not worth it. My most expensive card was a hercules geforce2mx (which I got almost 2 years ago) and that was $160 or so. But it was the fastest g2mx ever...it has 183Mhz RAM clock! w00t!
I'd still say that a g3ti200 was the best bang for the buck overall, but if you're talking higher end...the G4 4200 is THE bang for the buck card of the high end.
I like nvidia...I have 4 of their cards lying around my apt...(3 of them in PCs)...the hardware is good, and their driver support is unmatched. I'd like to see ATI give them some REAL competiton (they do with their HARDWARE, but then their drivers ruin the cards), just to keep nVidia in check. We don't want another abusive monopoly out there now, do we?

actually...i got a really good deal on my 3...i only paid about $265 which at the time when they came out was a reasonable price...but i haven't been disapointed yet...
