HOW-TO: WGA (wastegate actuator) replacement.

Yeah I just ordered the 6psi atp WGA, and I need to know how to install it without removing the turbo/manifold.

I just installed mine except I had to take off the manifold. If you have the time and the proper tools it can be done somewhat quickly. The only thing that was a b**** is the clip. You will know what I'm talking about once you get to that step. Also be careful with the egr threads because they can get stripped quite easily. I had to weld the manifold and the pipe because my thread was completly gone and I couldn't re-attach it. Now I have a cel, but I haven't reset the ecu yet so hopefully that gets rid of the cel.
I've read on the forums that people have done this but used a small cone filter attached to the egr piping. I might try it out if the cel won't go away.
good luck bro

Heck, we changed three of these out two on my car and you most definitely do not need to remove the manifold at least on a stock MSP.
You do need two people though. Mainly so the top person can push the acuator rod down while the bottom person slips it on to the wastegate arm.
It does not take long. Those stock IC pipes do suck the ass of life to remove. (bang)

actually, you are right....i did not need to remove the mani when i did it on a friend's MSP...he was there to push the actuator...still, you need some very good pliers to get the ******* pin in....even tho when i removed it it broke...
so i just out some chicken wire around it...(it happened to me too on my car, same fix :P )

maybe i went thru too much s*** to change mine, but i found that to be easier keeping in mind that i was alone..

do not get the rods...there is no point as it is a direct replacement

the rods make it adjustable like the OEM one. but dont do it unless you know how to install them properly.

yea, it'll just complicate things...hey...the atp will give you a free pound of boost
gotcha....ordered and shipped yesterday, they work fast! my vacuum is staying at 18-19...do you think it could be the colder weather thats bringing down the vacuum and the reason why its spiking to 10 when i had it set to 8.5psi?

its been 40's lately...oh well, the ATP looks better/more durable anyway, might as well change it right?

i know this thread is dead but i didnt have to do any of that work i just took the wga off with out removing any of that stuff i just took a long pry bar took the clip off the wga slid it off the lever thing and then lowerd the car and undid the two bolts and took it off o yeah i had to take the top intercooler pipe off but that was it....

so yea actuator-1 me-0 got the atp 'replacement' wga and attemtped to install it tonight. i couldnt get the stocker out at all. how exactly do you get to the second nut on the heat shield part of the actuator? (for you guys that did it without taking the turbo/mani out of course) and also how do you get the clip off the end of the rod? i didnt have time to mess with that at all i only fooled with the stupid nut on the shielded part. pictures would be great.

here's the clip that holds the rod onto the wastegate:

if that helps you understand how to take it off any better.

dude
is very easy!

the nut is a size 11mm
use two long extensions so that it reaches from under the car...
use one of those ANGLE sockets (the ones that let you do it at an angle)
if you are skinny enoug you'll be able to touch the nut from under the car and slip the 11 mm socket in
turn it twice and it should come off with your fingers

k thanks for the pics. ill prolly be making a run to sears in a little bit. id like to get this done before i go back to school tomorrow. ill go take a second stab at today hopefully. i still dont really understand how that e clip works, do you just compress it and it breaks free whatever its holding? is it similar to a c clip like the ones you use for hks bov's?

Would this be hard for one person to do without taking off the manifold? I might try to attempt this after work. And for when I put the new wastegate actuator in, is it that hard because you all say you'll need another person.
