How To: Make your exhaust manifold heat shield shiny as a new quarter

I already have a bottle of Turtle Wax Chrome Polish. Would that be good enough?

Can you post a picture of this or more details so I can get a better idea what you're talking about?

I posted pics of both on my 1st post.

The turtle wax might work, but I never tried it so i couldn't say. I would try the polish before I removed the heat shield or bought rubbing compound

Excellent job ZenProtege!. I use 3M products alot. You probably would have gotten even better results with a more agressive compound, but fine cut did a great job. You can get a quart size bottle of 3M stuff from a paint and body shop supply store. They make an awesome hand glaze that really deepens the paint's shine ( 3M Imperial Hand Glaze)

I am going to try it using my Milwaukee 0-1750RPM HD speed polisher with a Schlegel cutting pad and then a final finish pad.

I would not recommend painting as it will just burn off. I learned this the hard way with my Probe. I used the 1200 degree paint too. It not only burned off, but it burned a hole in my A/C line as well.

thank-you for the heads up.

For those of you wanting pics farther back.

Also, if the manifold is prepped, primered, and the correct temp paint used, you can paint the shield without a problem.

There is ultra high temp paint @ Autozone that will work even on exhaust manifolds (or so they say). Get the highest rated temp, I think its in the thousands of degrees. The can is shiny silver and has red text on it. The choice of colors is slim though. And yes, you will ahve to somehow prep it for best results.

thank you for the info

BTW thanks for giving me the props ZenProtege...if I am not mistaken, I think I was the first to polish the HS (ugh) , but I could be wrong.

Awee, stop arguing. Both engine's look fantastic. And as I said earlier, blood was spilt on mine and hasn't come off yet. I haven't done this bling to the cover yet, but when I get a chance, I'm going to try it. Thanks for the info guys.

And Ghost had his painted before with a high temp. paint also and worked for a short time. It later became burnt looking for some reason. I'm guessing you'll have to prime, it paint it, then paint it again later on down the road.

what are you talking about no-one is arguing. I think you mis-interpreted some text.
And yea our engines doooo look fanfuckintastic :) lol
.... actually I need to clean up my engine bay.

Ok, mad props to the innovator Casopolis as well. I just finished doing mine. I can't help but notice the guy that says you can paint the shield has his unpainted. The Probe's a/c lines extend a bit closer than our MSP's. But I still would not paint it as the Callaway header gets hotter than the Space Shuttle at lift off. A bit of a stretch, but you get my point. It responds quite well to a little sweat equity.

Anyway back on topic. The fun part was fitting it back in. I used the 3M fine cut and polished it with 3M polish. Now I have to do my Injen and Turbohoses, cause they look like s*** compared to the shield.

I'm confused, what does it matter if my shield is painted or not? I happen to like the polished/chrome look so that is what I went with. I was just passing on information that it would work due to the fact I have painted numerous engine parts in the past - just not on my Protege.

I guess from now on, I'll just keep information to myself even if I have a solution or it is not done to my car. (confused)

no dont do that I appreciated your input, i am considering painting mine

Mark94:

No disrespect intended on my part. I too have painted many engines and parts. I know all about prep/paint work. I am just saying that the heat from the exhaust manifold will eventually burn off the paint, even its its primed. Thats it plain and simple.

Why the f* would you want to paint your heatshield after seeing that shiny goodness?

I am not a big fan of shiny goodness. my engine isn't that blingy, mostly black and silver, but not shiny silver.

Ok so argument dropped. If anyone ever has input they should say it on here, IMO. Of course someone saying one product is better than the other w/o trying both... or someone talking about HP gains on their car with a mod that is not on the car, now that is a different story. When someone talks about something universal... such as painting, that is cool. I never bought the high temp paint but I knew about it and have also painted things... so I gave my 2 cents.

Thank you ZenProtege for putting together this write-up. Sorry for the recent jacking.

BTW you can add this thought.... if you flick thin metal and it 'tings' then it more than likely is stainless steel and therefore polishable. I flicked all the heatshields under my hood and that is where I got the idea to see if you can polish them. I tried, and it worked (well for the manifold HS). I think they coat them from stock.... but I have no idea what the coating is or what it does.

damn there were like 5 new posts when I got done typing! my last thread is about the arguing like 5 posts back....

I think black Powder-coated pipes with black HS would look sweet. I would do it if I had the $. In fact, I don't even know where I could get this done locally.
