How to get drum off?!!

Basically like what the above poster said. You have to readjust your brakes. There should be a small slotted wheel that you can spin. If you spin it towards or away from you will dictate the distance the Shoe Linings from the drum.

If you figure it out, make sure you readjust it by pulling the ebrake or (i would suggest readjusting from the back of the drum since there is a hole you can stick a flatblade in there..)

Adjust it too close and you'll have premature pad wear due to rubbing.

Enjoy =\

we dont have a star adjuster theres a gold thing with teeth on it that regulates the pad distance. the bastards just wont fit. i might do one old pad and one new one???

im confused. if i pull the e brake up, it actually gives more clearance for the drum?

also does not having any brake fluid affect the e-brake? i put in new pads and it went away.

i ran into this problem when i went to install my new rear shoes too. it just wouldnt slide back on. i had the adjuster thing adjust all the way in and the e brake wasnt on. i just got fed up and put the old shoes back on, since drum shoes dont wear out nearly as quick as disc pads. i should be good for awhile.

just remember, dont ever push your brake pedal in while the drum cover is off. i made that mistake, like a dumbass and i blew out both rear wheel cylinders. had to replace and then bleed whole brake system. s*** sucks.lol

dang...so this is probly an actual problem. what brand were your shoes?

what im doing is running one new one until it wears down a bit, and then try putting in the other new one later.

the shoe brand was "satisfied". never heard of them but. i got a whole brake setup off a member here for a good price. he said they are good shoes to get.

Old thread I know, but thats what its here for right? I can't seem to get my drums apart either. Also, if I order a new right rear hub/studs/bearing assembly what all comes with that other than the ovbious and would I just be better off having someone else do the work? Thanks.

i remember seeing a manual here online, but now i cant find it no matter how much i search...

i really need to replace my shoes, adjust everything and i think i might also have to replace the ebrake line... if i have my e-brake on all the way now you can still roll the car w/o any problem, thats how bad my drums are, and before i used to just adjust the little bolt by the e-brake, but that too doesnt help anymore.

i really need help since i never replaced the shoes before and adjusted them.. i would only clean them up, by opening it up and removing the brake dust, thats all...

if somone knows where that manual that would be awesome....
thanks

peace

thanx i was able to find the manual after some good time of searching :) but it turned out i didnt even need them, all i needed was my old man to help out, and the whole thing was done within an hr :D the new shoes are on now and they feel great....

Im guessing you needed to press the shoes in towards each other while someone pulls the ebrake?? I dunno what im doing wrong but the drum cover wont clear the shoes. (pissed)

Anyone have any tips on getting the phillips screws off the drums other than wd40? I used a rubber mallet to knock off the rust and the screws are getting a little stripped. Should i just take it to a nearby shop?

I had to drill out the screws and get new ones. If you happen to live near a Fastenal, they have a hex head screw in stock that fits the brake drums perfectly. I replaced my screws with these, and it makes it a lot easier to get them off the next time, especially if you put antiseize on them.

For anyone who has managed to successfully replace their shoes, what is the procedure for getting the drum back on?

who cares about the damn screws, it was there only for easier assembly of the wheels or suspension from the factory

toss that s*** in the trash!

I had the same problem getting mines back on ike the pads were too think. I saw one old one, and one new one?

I noticed tonight that the piece at the top of the drum brake that touches the top of both brake shoes can be adjusted. It has black rubber at on each side, connected to a metal piece that looks like a flathead screw but bigger. I think it goes smaller if you twist it clockwise with a pair of pliers. Im pretty sure you adjust that, and then pull the ebrake which will readjust by itself.

Hah I guess those screws really arent important at all! The cover IS mounted on the lugs.
