Hey Lord Zath, if its not too much trouble could you give me a step by step procedure in how to install the rings? I checked the How-To but couldn't find it.

Also what tools would I need.

Thanks In advance.

I don't have pics for you guys, but I do have a photographic memory, and will try to explain from my experience. If there's anything to add (i.e., forgot a step), please say so and I'll edit it in. I can't seem to post in the How-To section, so perhaps this can be moved to how-to?

Materials Needed
-DaveB Rings (duh)
-Gauge Cluster (duh)
-Flathead Screwdriver (preferably short w/a wide head)
-Microfiber Towel
-Needlenose Pliers

1. Unscrew the two screws on the top of the gauge cluster. Use a stubby flathead screwdriver if you have one.

2. Pull the black outer casing towards you. This may take some force - but not a ton. You may need to rock the top of the casing towards you to get the clips on the bottom to come out.

3. You should be able to pull the whole cluster out now. You'll notice that there are wires plugged into it. I'd recommend carefully disconnecting them, though you don't need to do this.

4. The clear plastic cover is clipped onto the cluster in 4 or 5 locations. Just go around and gently unclip these spots w/the flathead.

5. Pull off the clear cover.

6. You now have access to the gauge faces. DO NOT BREAK THE NEEDLES OR PULL THEM OFF.

7. You should be able to unclip the black plastic piece that the rings will attach to. This is a step you don't need to do as well, but makes installation much easier.

8. Gently place the rings over their respective locations and press them into place. Do not apply too much pressure or you may snap the black trim piece.

9. To ensure a complete fit, take the microfiber towel and cover a portion of one of the rings. Use needlenose pliers over the covered area and gently apply pressure to make sure these guys are on tight. Continue around the ring until you've gone about 380 degrees (a lil more than complete circle). Do this for all 3 rings of course.

10. Use the microfiber towel to clean off the rings. Last thing you want to see on your gauge cluster is your fingerprint!

11. Begin reassembling everything. It goes black strip to gauge faces -> clear plastic to gauge cluster (you will want to clean out the inside w/the microfiber towel as well to ensure no prints) -> reconnecting cables -> Sliding back in -> cleaning off clear cover w/microfiber towel -> reinstalling the black cover piece -> pressing on bottom of cover piece to ensure clips have grabbed -> screwing in the top two screws -> cleaning off area one last time w/microfiber towel.

That should be it. This is a very easy install if you take your time, don't get frustrated, and use common sense. Took me about 45 minutes to do mine.

Nice how to Lord Zath. I just did this to my 1999 Protege a couple days ago, and all I can say is be very, very, very, very careful when you have the clear plastic peice off. You don't want to join the 'Broken Gauge Cluster' club. Once you take that black plastic peice off that covers the gauges, it is way easier to put the Dave B rings on. Can't stress enough though to be careful and take your time doing this mod.

On a side not, Dave and his wife Kelly make a great product, and are great people to deal with. The Dave B rings make the gauges look 10 times better. It should have been a standard option on the Protege in my opinion.

I have the cd w/ a video of how to do it I just rcvd w/ my dave b rings if anybody wants it...
