How-to: +2psi for a cheap $5

I did this last week for a few hours, the car felt alot faster. however after some hard acceleration i noticed a sulphur-like smell , it was pretty bad. Anyone know what this could be?? kinda scared me so i took the spring off. My mods are Injen CAI, CustomMSPs SMIC, Vibrant S-pipe back exhaust.
A lot of times you'll get that smell from the exhaust when its new, but you've had that for just as long as me. Maybe the extra boost is running you hotter and opening up the exhaust more, I still smell it rarely but occasionally. How do you like the SMIC?

Ive only had the exhaust on for about 1 week when i tried the spring. I can see the car running hotter though, could have been the problem. The SMIC i got is great, i felt a big difference afer that mod.

its your exhaust then that smells like sulfur. its oily residues left over from fabrication burning off the inside of the pipes. usually takes a couple days to start then goes away after a week. On my buddy's 300Z it smelled for like a month or so. I think you should be ok to redo the spring, I have had mine on for a couple months, since this thread started, I need to take it off til I do my smic!

Hahaha! Try 5.5 stock!
well i was at like 6 something stock. with catless exhuast and gredyy cat back amd MAM fmic kit its HOLDING like 7.3

hey what size springs (american part numbers would be helpful) would i use to boost my msp:

1psi:
1.5 psi:
2psi:

the only upgrades i'm running is colder sparkplugs and the pcm flash, would i be ok increasing it 2 psi?

there no way im beliveing this doesnt damage your wastegate.

good write up though.

It won't damage the wastegate, since both are working by shear mechanics. The internal wastegate has a spring in it to begin with. Adding a spring in this manner works in the same fashion as changing the internal spring to one with a higher spring rating.

Using mechanics to control boost is much more efficient than using boost controllers because there's no need to bleed of the air going to the wastegate. This is one reason why I prefer external wastegates like Tial, because you can just swap out springs for different boost settings instead of using a boost controller.

Personally, I'd rather spend the extra $30 and get a used MBC than spend the time and effort putting the spring on. When I get around to upgrading the turbo, mani, etc I'm definitely going with an external wastegate setup.

it took me about 5 minutes with minimal effort to get this on and I am happy with it. drove the car onto ramps, popped the hood, fed a straightened coat hanger with a small hook down through the path the spring will follow, got under the car, attaced the carb spring to the actuator arm and the free end to the hook on the coat hanger, went back up top and pulled the coat hanger through with the spring and attached to the actuator shield. Took longer to set everything up than it did to install, pretty easy and effective mod. Best part is no altering vac lines or any of that nonsense. (thumb)

Looks like a good mod.
But I do not have a boost gauge.

I got have a stering pod.

Yeah i tried this out for a little while in the summer, worked nicley and controlled boost well.

I found there is no need to work from above and below the engine. If you climb under with a nice pre-bent spring, attach one end to the actuator arm then just reach up with your hand an pull the spring and hook it onto the onto the very end of the vacuum line coming out of the actuator. It seemed way to difficult to get this hooked on to the shield cause of the angle and the route of the spring. Try it out, it takes more time to jack up the car then it does to slap this bad boy on.

My 2 cents:

This is a great mod, I did this back in the spring time and didn't have any problems while it was on. I cut my spring short enough to give me a solid 10lbs. of boost, never spiked or anything like my old JoeP MBC. When the temp dropped below 50 degrees however I did start hitting fuel cut so I ended up taking it off and replacing it with another spring just like it, only not cut as short. My car is holding a steady 8lbs. now with no fuel cut problems (temp. this morning was 16 degrees). When the weather warms up I will put the other spring back on, or just buy a good EBC if I have the cash.

Sorry...i disagree....i had one actuator go on me...and the second a wastegate...so speak for yourself.....plus half of these people doing this mod do not even have the base mods to support more boost....if you are going to up the boost at least have colder sparks and a fmic/smic.....if not that an afc.....

oh yea...you feel the difference though....not bashing on the cheap mod, good idea, but the long term affects are not worth it.....if you dont have a warranty or cant afford a new lsd, tranny, motor, so forth...wait to up the boost on this car...Hitting the fuel cut should be enough common sense that this mod is not such a good idea....

Tried it last weekend. Took me 15 minutes to lift the car, get underneath, hook the spring to the actuator arm, get out from under the car, grab the top of the spring (attached to coat hanger, nice idea) and clip it to the shield, lower the car.

Best 15 minute mod yet!!! Thanks.

No problem, glad you like it.
