How Realiable are RX-7's?

I was hearing that they weren't very realiable...I'm talking about the 80's models...wouldn't that be the single turbo?

the 87-91 (single)turbo models can be a realible car if the proper mant. is done, the non-turbo's are bullet proof. most people don't have a clue when it comes to the rotaries.

I was thinking of getting a Non Turbo RX-7, for a drift car, do they drift good? (stock)? I'll do suspension mods. But what about the engine enough HP to get sideways? Also what do they run 1/4th and 0-60?

2nd gen Rx-7's aren't a bad choice for drift cars. Are you drifting for exhibition or for racing? It has good power and can easily throw you sideways.

The car will last as long as you're willing to take care of it. Personally I would baby the crap out of the engine. If it's specifically for racing, just gut it and don't worry about it. What you really want to do is make sure the engine is in good condition and the chassis has a clean title.

I have a non-turbo fc you'll need to get the rear steer elim. and a LSD for them, i run eibach with tokico 5 way shocks and f/r strut tower bars. my stock port motor has about 150whp which is pleanty for drifting, i can get loose very easily.

Chris, have you ever drifted in any other cars besides the Rx-7? If so, how would you compare the Rx-7 to the other cars?

1st gens are easier to drift because they're much lighter...

And cheaper to run and mod (carb)

but 2nd gens are newer, and more luxurious..

I have'nt drifting anything but my 1st gen or my 2nd gen, the first gen is lighter but i have found it easier to drift in my FC.

rx7glse you have a mazdaspeed miata on order, i saw those at the SEMA show damm they are nice.

I wasn't really actually going to race it just to road race, and play with...thanks for the info though! about how much do they run 1st gen non turbo?

Usually aqbout 2-3 grand for one in great shape.

I had an '82 13B Streetport and a '91 N/A RX-7 and as long as the proper maintenance is performed, they are rock solid reliable. The 1st gen would be a much better drifting candidate in stock form due to its solid rear alxe and light weight. The 2nd gen is pretty good with the rear steer eliminator installed.

If you're going to just use it for drifting, you should be able to get one that has a solid engine but that has asthetic defects for under $1000. Having rust knocks quite a bit off the value, but that shouldn't matter for a drifter.
