How Quiet is your engine??

i just want to know ...

mine is bit noisy after it warms up.. i could hear engine noise and feel its vibration from inside cabin.. (i know i did not buy Lexus lol)

i also notice engine shaking at start up like... 1 out of 10...

but once i start driving.. it is smooth and quiet..(scratch)

mine is currently at 2000 miles....

Does the steering wheel vibrate when at a stop light with the car in gear? This i one thing that annoys the heck out of me with my Acura TSX. My Toyota Matrix never did this.

I found myself turning the ignition only to hear the starter grind against an already spinning flywheel ( it was during a severely windy storm) but still... engine is so smooth and quite I didn't know it was running, guess I'll look at the tach from now on.

  • 1st to 4th gears are a typical 4cyl engine noise (I have owned many so possibly I'm "immune" already :D)
  • 5th gear is so quiet, even at 4000+RPM, It may have to do with the engine size (2.3L is a big guy for a 4cyl IMO)
  • Idle vibration is so subtle, barely feel the engine running when i.e. @ a traffic light
  • 2006 shakes more than 2008 when firing-up on very cold weather. I remember seeing somewhere a "fix" if its pretty bad, and it has to do with the grounding wire(s). The OEM ones should have a wider diameter or something like that

mine usually sounds like it's off. more than one passenger has noted that they couldn't tell the car was even running when they went for a ride.

yeah mine's virtually silent at idle too, sometimes it has minor un-smoothness at idle, but it's usually perfectly smooth and quiet.

on a slightly off topic note, though, just had the ECU reprogrammed the other day for the engine stumble TSB (seems to have worked so far). Not sure if some recent software upgrade, related or not, made this difference, but I was wringing 'er out today, and noticed that at full throttle, when the tach hits 6k, the engine really growls to life similar to a VTEC motor. Not sure what the engine's doing... I know we don't have lift like a Honda VTEC or a Toyota VVTL-i, but something significant happens. Mentioned this before a year or so ago in a seperate topic, but now it's at a higher RPM, louder growl, and there's a noticeable sudden burst of power too.

Soulds like fun. I still need to take mine in for that.

I personally think the engine does sound a bit loud too especially during cold startups (when i say cold i mean SoCal cold 50 ish), and a slight stumble every so often. I forget all about it though while im revving it up to 6k ;)
