I've gone about 10-15 mi past 0.
When I fill up on zero, with a 13.8 GAL tank (FWD) I get about 11.8 gal in before auto shutoff. So, I'd say you have 2 GAL remaining when you get to Zero. with the type of engine, it's my understanding that you definitely don't want to run it out, so I don't normally go too far when I'm on zero.

Agreed, as the manual actually says, "We recommend keeping the tank over 1/4 full," though I don't know if that's to prevent mechanical problems or just to avoid running out of gas.
Both!
The internal in-tank fuel pumps of today are kept cool, and lubricated from the fuel flowing through them. A dry fuel pump will go bad quickly.
In addition, walking several miles to a gas station and back with a big red gas can is not very exciting.![]()
So who is going to be the first one to see how many licks it takes to get to center of the tootsie roll pop???
I think someone should fill up a gas can, charge the cell phone up, and set out on a straight highway and see what the final number is...

Frankly, I don't see the reward in doing this, you really risk galling the fuel pump, which is lubricated and cooled by the gas. Sure, take it to zero before fill up, or even a little beyond in an emergency, but don't run it dry.
