I did something I wouldn't typically do yesterday. I took a 230,000 mile car to the dealer for service. We bought the 2016 CX9 with 200k miles (highway miles, he was a traveling salesman) in 2021, and have only done oil changes since. Due to my deferring maintenance the front rotors were heavily grooved. Our local Mazda dealer's service department is not crazy expensive (we bought our 2021 CX5 new from them so I am familiar with the service dept) so I took the CX9 in for front rotors, pads, brake fluid flush and while you're at it, oil change. Their inspection surprisingly didn't turn up a bunch of urgent stuff. They even said rear brakes were ok. But they did note the timing chain cover had a "severe leak" and the very labor intensive repair would cost $1900. I confirmed this is in fact a labor intensive job and their price is not outrageous. I said, "no thanks". I'm not sure how severe the leak is. Car looks ok, drives great, but with 225k miles might be worth $3k on a good day. Meanwhile there wasn't a drop of oil on the driveway this morning. We will keep an eye on it, check the oil regularly.
