How do I improve start up performance

The octane debate has been around for years. 93 burns more efficiently than 87, so I suppose it will be better. yes, the car was designed for 87, but I notice a lot of improvement in throttle response on 93 octane Shell gas.

I will try all these suggestions, but I was also curious about the 93 vs 87 octane, so I tried it. I didn't really notice any difference, I think it might be because it cant take advantage of the higher octane or it just doesnt need it, I dunno.

I used some fuel injector cleaner and I noticed much better throttle response, the engine also seems smoother. I used the expensive stuff ($5).

Sounds like you need an all electric car to cure the start problem, and then have a CD made of a header, CAI, and cat-back for the sound, with a speaker system under the hood.

It sounds like any other normal car that I hear start up. Its like the ignition turning over or something and than it starts. I want instant gratification.

I have one word for you my friend; Priorities.

What are you hoping to achieve? You want it to turn over and just fire instantly? Sorry friend, but we have Proteges! They don't work like that. It takes the engines a couple cycles to get compression up and start mixing fuel, etc. A Mercedes is a different story, because they are designed from the factory to start in like 1/8th of a second or whatever it is, and they literally will start on the first cycle of the engine that the starter pushes it to. It's wild. But that's not gonna happen on the protege, no matter how much money you put into it. I'm honestly very very confused by your apparent obsession with it cranking that fast.

sounds like basically he wants to turn on the ignition & imediatly hear VROOOOOOM.... i guess... this is a 4 cyl you know....

Hey guys, give the guy some slack. For all we know, the battery could be going out, causing a sluggish start. How about helping a recently joined member with some actual help, instead of bashing him.

If people can double the horsepower on cars, why can't they make them start in 1 cycle. I think its possible and I am going to try to do it. I was just checking to see if anyone else has done it, or has tips/products that help. Apparently not, so I will do it alone.

Not even Indy cars have the ability to start in 1 cycle. As far as 1 or 2 seconds time-wise, look at ignition, fuel, and cranking amps upgrades, as they all play a major role.

Reading through three threads and no progress. Yeah, give the guy some slack.

Anywho....let me ask you this.

1.How many miles on your Protege(5)?
2.Recent tune up gone wrong?
3.Change your oil regularly?
4.Go to Autozone or somewhere that can do a load test on the battery.
5.Check engine light on?
6.Notice any lost in performance?
7.Any mods?
8.Best of all....when did you last notice this happens?

My car starts right up and vroom...zoom..zoom. (first)

the factory batteries are not very good.....get yourself a new one and i am sure that will solve your problem. old oil could cause the engine to be sluggish at start-up, too.....
