HID scary story.. lol

well, i was looking for my original thread but can't find it.. lol(eek2)
anyway, today, as i was driving home (daytime), my HID just "died". (eek2)
i use my headlight as DRL (and looks cool with HID on ^^), i actually saw my lights goes out as it was reflected on car in front of me.

first thought came to my mind was "It must be ebay brand HID kit" ^^
it lasted whopping 2 months..

I got home and opened the hood, expecting to find "fried ballasters"..etc..
and.. guess what?? everything looked okay.. no burnt smell nor any sign of smoke..

i also checked the relay harness and everything looked okay.. but still no power to HID.. i took out a fuse, suspecting it could be related to that but it also checked out okay.. i put it back then.. tired one more time.. this time HID kit fires up as normal.. i was like.. What the..(argh)

now here comes the scary part... i went out driving again.. (night time)
i was waiting on a traffic light to turn green.. i pushed the gas bit harder than usual.. and the HID light "blinks" well, it is more like the light goes off then comes back right after...(rant)

i stopped again at STOP sign. then tried heavy on gas than usual.. then there goes again.. "Blink" ...(argh)

I got home.. bit worried.. disconnet the relay harness and hook it up "directly" to headlight plug.. went out again tested same.. and it worked just "fine".. (boom07)

what could have caused it..???

i am suspecting.. faulty.. harness..

sorry for long post.. had to rant... this late night...(rant)

you definately have something moving as the car accelerates or decel, maybe a bad groud connection,or simply loose,be careful for any chance to make a short circuit....

Its likely a bad ballast man.

It heats up when on..then breaks connection internally..Cools in the off cycle and starts all over again..It will gradually get worse and likely go out all together.

A ballast will look completely normal when bad and burnt out..They dont "BURN" ....they just go bad internally.
If you bought a cheap set..yeah..I believe them goin' out that quick.

Are you using premium or regular gas? Oh wait, possibly it is an installation issue, bring it back to whoever did it... LOL ;)

No, seriously, on the bright side you are all right and did not happen on the highway, change the harness just in case...

i don't think there is any moving parts as i secured every parts in places..
only places i can think of it is inside ballasters? may be??

i agree with you the quality of ballasters.. thinking to get decent ones down the road..

Yes.. thank God , it did not happend while i was driving 75mph at night time with rain pouring down.. lol

i disconnet the relay harness, and now it is connected directly to headlight plugs.. will see what happens..

you just hooked this directly into your headlight harness...no relay?
If so..go right back out and undo that..unless you like replacing melted wires.
There is a reason its on a relay.

It would be no different than a headlight going out....Happens thousands of times each day in each city I am sure.

isn't there are 2 ways to connet HID kit?

1. relay harness
2. direct connection to headlight plug..

it seems not many people go by "relay harness" route.. (I WAS one of them).

Depends on the kit and the configuration and its overall power draw.
If the power draw is too high , and you dont use a realy where its needed..you will eventually melt the insulation on the wiring and burn up the wires..or potentially worse....The car....But not likely.

Standard 35watt HIDs draw less power than halogen, except during startup.

oh and seriously guys, use quality ballasts...not ebay crap.

today.. i added a relay to each headlight for extra protection..
after switching to direct connect to headlgiht plug... start up flickering has been disappeared.. interesting..(boom07)

I am going to say it's the Ebay ballast as well. I went through both ballasts on my CBR I had. I got an Ebay kit for a car and pluged in one set. 2 months later, ballasts died. I grabbed the other ballast I had as a spare and threw it in. 2 months later, dead as well. Pulled the ebay kit off the bike and went back to halogen.

Now, for my Pro5, I've gone with ApexCone and I've gone afew months and they're great. And, from the feedback from other members using ApexCone products, I'm not worried about them going out. Plus, if they do, I've got a warranty!!

Hope your issue gets fixed though!!
