09 Speed 3
Ok I'm looking at a 06 MAzda Speed6 used. And a few questions, I really wanted a EVO but cant find one for under 20k with good miles. So here goes how does it compare to the EVO, modding wise, parts price wish and and do they mod well. I spent only 3000$ on my old EVO and got 375 whp. Do the Mazdas mod well or is it diffacult and exspensive. I'm getting out of an 07 GTI that I let my wife talk me in to and to mod those is carzy $$$$. Also what turbo size is the mazda and boost levels. I now nothing of the car the more info will help greatly. Thank you in advance fao any and all help..

You can't compare an evo to a speed6, i dont know why so many new people do. search and you will see. the ms6 has a k04 turbo that pushes 15.6psi stock. If you are looking for an evo and want an evo, then get one, the speed6's limits are still being tested and while they respond well to mods don't respond as well as an evo does to the same mods. Not to mention the speed6 weighs more.

God what is it with the k04 turbo's. There are small. On myu VW is a k03. But thanx maybe I will hold off. But some more info woould be nice. how good it the block and what can it handle.

if you read around it appears the stock block can push a little of 300whp before problems start to arise.

welcome to the board, bova is absolutely correct. evo and ms6 are not in the same class really...ms6 is more speed meets luxury, whereas teh evo is speed and more speed.

WOW thats low maybe I will hold off and wait for an EVO. But the ms6 is a nice azz car.. Too bad it doesnt have speed potental, with out a lot aof bucks..

speed6 is great i would no change it for an EVO but the EVO is better for modding!

Pretty much what everyone else said. You did mention you are married. A speed6 is a bit more on the mature side and is much easier to get kids in and out of the back seat than the smaller EVO. That was one of my primary selectors for a speed6 (along with acceleration and cornering for fun (drive))

i like the speed6 more.. it's more of a sleeper and people really wonder what car it is..
it has potential but nothing compared to a evo. something fun a new to mod.
are the new evo Xs any safer than the old ones? speed6 has real airbags :D

Yeah, this is not true. I think your thinking of the stock turbo charger.

To the orignal poster through, find any post by the captian (ken) at protege garage and in his sig you will see what the stock block and stock fuel system can do. I'm terms of modding, I think everyone is not explaining it right to him. The evo is more moddable simply because of the parts aviliable, that dosent mean its cheaper. Becuase of the fame that companies like AMS and the like have had creating 1000 hp evo's makes them popular but they have had more money put into them then the car itself.

Give the ms6 some time, your dealing with new tech and new methods have to be developed to create new products.

I had the option to buy both and choose to just buy the ms6.

you might also want to consider, that you can get into a ms6 GT rightnow for about 10k less then an evo. depending on state tax and what not. Just something to think about.

Ken is actually the original poster to say that the rods in this car are thin and frail and they will eventually break if your running a good amount of power.

yeah, they are, but they said they are running that much power with no problems other then clutch rightnow and like throttle plate control.

mabe i have my info wrong? pardon me if i do, i've recently started to dig through everything and by no means am an expert, but thats what i understood from all the discussions. You can boost safely 18 psi on the stock internals with the gt3071r and be ok, but yeah you will wanna upgrade for more then that.

but protege garage's dyno shows the number like it is soo that it for what its worth i guess. To me, those are impresssive numbers on a stock block and apprently a good response to mods imho

Ok, While I love the way the MS6 looks sm not sure I want to spend 5k to get close to 400 whp. I had 2 EVO's one and 03 and a 04, the 04 I spent $2700 and got 373 whp, stock turbo and ran 11.89 1/4 mile time. nothing fancy bolt on's, cams and tune. I I wanted to det close to that I would have to open the block and do internals correct. I'm looking at used MS6 an 06 and 03-04 Used EVO's between 19k and 22k. I would rather spend the lesseer, being on a MS6 but modding potential plays a part. If I save $2300 on sale price but have tro spend twice that to get in the mid 300whp it's not worth it IMO. So keep this going I'm loking to make a choice, this week. Thank you Guys.. .

It is a refined car compared to the EVO. A daily driver designed to be competitive with BMW and Lexus when it comes to performance and livability. The EVO is a racecar with street legal tires and turn signals. There IS a difference and you have to chose what you want.

When you are young and playful, the EVO makes sense. But as you mature and get more conscious of children and other issues of life, the MS6 sounds more sane.

Me, I went with the MS3 but I wish I had AWD many times I drive.

the quality of materials dosent even compare. like fourthmeal said, the ms6 has a very audi ish feel too it. Its so hard to describe but the first time i felt it was when i drove an ACURA TL a-spec. Like the ride was firm, but not harsh, it was quiet, yet i could hear the exhaust when i wanted too, it was comfortable and sporty. etc etc, it was a good balance. Same with the ms6, easier to drive.

honestly if its all about numbers to you then go for the evo, I personally wont track my daily driver so i care about the feel of it, I still get the rush of the turbo and and all wheel drive with lots more refinement. To put it simply, if i dident get this car, then it was going to be a bmw 335i (twin turbo) for me. That was the only other car that could compare in driver satisfaction. but something about being able to buy 2.5 ms6 at the price i got it for (brand new) compared to 1 bmw dident quite appeal to me, as much as i would have loved a bimmer, I love this car even more and its tons more practical.

Dont get me wrong though, when i was younger 18-19 ish, i ran with the tuner crowd and was dead set on getting the new evo, but when i actually drove it and started looking around at compareable cars, it wasent so appealling to me anymore. I'm 21 now and still modify my cars, but no longer am willing to sacrifice everyday driving for all out performace, i have a seperate car for that.

it comes down to what fits you best. the minute you drive the car, you will know if its right for you or not. just ask yourself, will i still wanna get in and drive it in 3-5 years down the road. Also, this is just a personal preferance, but i would not get a used evo.

gl shopping.
